Is the Brittany Spaniel related to the French Spaniel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Brittany was named for the French province of Brittany and may be the a result of crossing the Orange and White Setter and some not clearly identified French dog. Since the Brittany looks a lot like the Welsh Springer Spaniel some think the two may be related. The breed is one of the most popular pointing breeds for bird hunting. In some countries the breed is referred to as a "Brittany Spaniel", however in the United States it is referred to as just "Brittany". The Brittany was first shown in France in 1896 and first recognized by the AKC in 1934.

How good is Brittany Spaniel sense of smell?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I'm no scientist but my grand-daughter has a Springer Spaniel which stays with me when she and her family are away from home. The dog has a favourite rubber ball and I have consistently used a nearby three-acre woodland clearing to exercise the dog; I throw the ball and he retrieves it. The wild grass and tangled weed can be anything up to 24 inches high and I can throw the ball a fair distance. Nose close to the ground, he casts around in long, fast sweeps until he's sniffed it out. We haven't lost the ball once during the entire three years, even when he doesn't see the direction of the throw.

How big does a husky cross with Brittany spaniel grow?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I am involved in the competitive sled dog world. I raise and breed Samoyeds and Siberian Huskies. But I buy dogs from other breeders to get something I need on my team but I am not getting in my breeding program. Last spring (Febuary) I bought two 1/2 Siberian 1/2 Brittany spaniels. These dogs were bred as sled dogs by a good friend of mine. I got them as a breeding pair because I have seen this mix in action and they are amazing! So to answer your question my working line Brittany x Siberians are 37 lbs for the female and 45 lbs for the male. The working line Siberians are smaller and so are the working line Brittanys so your dog may mature bigger then this but probably not by much.

A Brittany Spainel is a medium sized sporting dog which was mainly bred for bird hunting. They stand about 19 inches tall and weigh between 30 and 40 pounds. The coat is of moderate length, dense, flat, or wavy, with slight feathering on the ears and legs. Although they are normally referred to as spaniels they are more like a pointer or a setter. Their color is normally white with orange patches or white with liver patches. They are easy to train and sweet-tempered making them a good house pet.

What is the best way to house break a Brittany Spaniel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You should start training your puppy to potty train as soon as you can. Take the dog out a lot and praise them and give them treats whenever they go to the bathroom outside. If you catch the dog peeing inside say no sternly and take them outside. Leave them out there for a while so they get that they are supposed to go to the bathroom when they are outside. Praise them when they do go to the bathroom outside.

What is a microseizure?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I have been using this term to define what look like brief, involuntary muscle contractions in my old Brittany spaniel. His is prone to the occasional full blown seizure and is on phenobarb to control those. But every once in a while his body will convulse suddenly, like he's getting jolted with a small amount of electricity. It only lasts for a second or two. I don't know if "microseizure" is the right term, I've simply co-opted it because it seems to fit logically with what I'm seeing.
