The cars in the Indy 500 must meet specific requirements, which change periodically. Currently, the chassis must be manufactured by Dallara, while Honda and Chevrolet manufacture the engines. The requirements specify things like RPM (maximum of 12000), fuel (ethanol), and transmission (sequential, with six gears). For more information, the Wikipedia article "IndyCar Series" contains a complete list of specifications.

There was no actual Indianapolis 500 in 1918. The track was being used for WWI, but a 500 mile race was held in Springdale, Ohio on a 2-mile board-track. The track was dismantled after the race, with some of the wood being sold and is in homes in the area today. The exact site of the track is now occupied by I-275 between the Mosteller and US-42 exits. The east turn's (the straights faced E-W) outer edge was just against Cincinnati-Dayton road.

Janet Guthrie and Shawna Robinson are the only 2 women prior to the running of the 2012 Daytona 500 where Danica Patrick will be added to the list. Danica has a guaranteed starting spot thanks to Stewart Haas Racing. They have a golden ticket for being top 35 in owners points from 2011 which assures them of starting the first 5 races no matter where they qualify.
