Volunteer experience in the field will strengthen a student's interpersonal skills as well as increase his understanding of career requirements. In Texas, physical therapists must receive a four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited university and then enroll in a master's level program. There are no bachelor's degree programs for physical therapists in the state. The State of Texas requires that physical therapists hold at least a master's degree from an accredited physical therapy program and pass a national exam administered by the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners.

Typically this degree is an associate in applied science (AAS). The associates degree is designed as a two year program of study as a full-time student provided the student takes the degree as prescribed by the college, and provided the student does not require prerequisite coursework as a result of basic skills testing. There are some programs of study that may take a bit longer depending on the number of credits required. Usually these are programs within the health related fields. In addition, for students who require developmental coursework as a result of basic skills testing, it would take longer. How much longer would depend on the extent of the developmental courses they are required to take. Evidently, those individuals who attend college on a part-time bases would also extend their time in school. How much longer would depend on the credit load carried each semester. Typically, an associates degree takes between 60 and 64 credits to complete depending on the specific school, program of study, and state mandates.

I study occupational therapy at the moment and it is free because the NHS pays for us to study it.
I am a PTA from the south and we do not use set up help to document a patient's support. It is a nursing or an occupational therapy terminology but I do know it means to prepare the area for the patient prior to ADL's like eating, bathing, transfers or dressing. For instance, you may have a patient who has difficulty opening up a milk carton or has to be positioned in their bed prior to eating but does not need help eating their food. If a therapist just assist with opening up their milk cartoon and positioning the patient so he or she can reach their food would be set up help for eating. Or you may have a patient that is unable to propel their own wheel chair to get in their bed but if I was push the wc chair close to the bed, the patient would be able to get out of their chair into their bed. That would be set up help with transfers. I did not help the patient get out of the chair into the bed, I just placed the wheel chair close to the bed to help set the patient up. Hope that makes sense and helps.

Probably the term doesn't necessarily need to be, but the abbreviation for it - which is "OT" - should definitely always be capitalized, both letters.
It's definitely not a major that anyone can sleep through, but any program leading into a masters degree won't be easy. If you are good with science courses and social skills it will be worth it, however, and after years of schooling the rest will be a piece of cake.

The following is by and according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Employment of physical therapists is expected to grow much faster than average. Job opportunities will be good, especially in acute hospital, rehabilitation, and orthopedic settings. Employment change. Employment of physical therapists is expected to grow 27 percent from 2006 to 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. The impact of proposed Federal legislation imposing limits on reimbursement for therapy services may adversely affect the short-term job outlook for physical therapists. However, the long-run demand for physical therapists should continue to rise as new treatments and techniques expand the scope of physical therapy practices. Moreover, demand will be spurred by the increasing numbers of individuals with disabilities or limited function. The increasing elderly population will drive growth in the demand for physical therapy services. The elderly population is particularly vulnerable to chronic and debilitating conditions that require therapeutic services. Also, the baby-boom generation is entering the prime age for heart attacks and strokes, increasing the demand for cardiac and physical rehabilitation. And increasing numbers of children will need physical therapy as technological advances save the lives of a larger proportion of newborns with severe birth defects. Future medical developments also should permit a higher percentage of trauma victims to survive, creating additional demand for rehabilitative care. In addition, growth may result from advances in medical technology that could permit the treatment of an increasing number of disabling conditions that were untreatable in the past. Widespread interest in health promotion also should increase demand for physical therapy services. A growing number of employers are using physical therapists to evaluate worksites, develop exercise programs, and teach safe work habits to employees. Job prospects. Job opportunities will be good for licensed physical therapists in all settings. Job opportunities should be particularly good in acute hospital, rehabilitation, and orthopedic settings, where the elderly are most often treated. Physical therapists with specialized knowledge of particular types of treatment also will have excellent job prospects.
