Crankcases and PCV Valves

Basically, a crankcase is the casing for the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. Combustion produces pressure within the crankcase. Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valves regulate the vapor pressure within the engine and recycle it back into the engine.

How do you extract broken oil dipstick?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In many vehicles, the dipstick tube can be removed. Check and see if this is possible on your vehicle. If so, just remove the tube from around the dipstick. There should then be enough of the dipstick sticking out from the engine to grab on to.

What is the function of a pcv valve?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The purpose of the PCV valve is to regulate the flow of crankcase fumes into the intake manifold where they can be burned. Prior to 1963, cars had no PCV and used road draft tubes that just left the hydrocarbon emissions from the crankcase out into the open air. The PCV valve also has a secondary role as a check valve, to prevent flow back into the crankcase. This prevents potential ignition of the crankcase fumes, should the engine backfire. The PCV system is also crucial for to proper engine sealing. The system alleviates crankcase pressure, which can push out on seals and gaskets, contributing to oil leaks.

Where is the PCV valve located on 1989 jeep Cherokee?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no - repeat - no PCV on the 4.0 motor and many others in this year range. The crankcase ventilation system is actually the smaller plastic hose plugged at the rear of the valve cover leading to the intake manifold. It has a sized hole to control the amount of air it draws through the intake. Installing a PCV into the larger hose at front will pressurize the crankcase and blow the weakest gasket, causing oil leaks and a series of gasket and seal changes that never solve the problem. Do not install a PCV unless you know for a fact the factory put it there.

Where is the PCV valve located on a 1994 chev 454 cid engine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If the 1991 lumina's engine is the same as the corsica LT's, then location is pretty easy to find. In the back of the engine, located in the middle, a few inches down, should be a rubber hose about 3/4inches wide. This hose goes into a gromment in the valve covers. It should be easy to pull out by hand. At the end of the hose will be the pcv valve which should resemble a car cigarette lighter. Shake it. If it rattles then it should be okay to go. If it doesn't, then replace. Good luck. The following web address will lead you to an image of the engine and the area you will find the pcv valve in. http://img113.exs.cx/img113/182/pcv-valve.jpg

A gas inlet allows gas to enter it's host without any/very little escaping into the atmosphere, it also serves as a moderator i.e. it controls the volume gas entering it's host.

Ford Laser KE cylinder head specifications?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The only specs I can give is the amount of metal removed during machining. There are two 'witness' marks on the surface, small round indentations about 5mm diameter and about 1mm depth. Usually the head can be machined to this depth on most motors. However, Ford stresses that on E3,E5,B6 motors the head should be machined enough to take out only slight warp as taking off too much changes the valve timing. Chris

Where is the oil separator lower intake manifold pcv valve on a ford taurus v 6 3.0 24 valve dohc engine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Its between the lower and upper intake manifolds. It is part of the lower intake manifold and is covered by the upper intake tubing. It's like the surfer riding the ocean with the waves curled over head. In the 3.0 dohc's case the ocean would be the lower intake, where the oil separator rides while the upper intake manifold tubing curls over the top of if. If your lucky you can see just the leading surface with a flash light. The PCV valve is here. Start at the air intake end, look under the intake for a special Ford hose assembly; its 3 piece. At the air intake theres a elbow attached to the bottom, its diameter starts at about 1-1/2" and transends to about 5/8" at the plastic or metal formed tube (year dependant). That tube goes down and under the upper manifold where it attaches to a short 2" hose, which in turn connects to the pcv valve. The valve on my 02 is a black plastic piece. It inserts into the oil separator with a quarter turn to the right. It has a square flange about 3/4" back from the valves tube opening. I used a piece of 3/4" sq alumimum tubing (it has and Inner sq of about 5/8") to remove and insert my valve. It you can find a 5/8" 8 point 1/2" socket it will also work. I am told that the rubber elbow I mentioned above is the weak link in this system. It seems that after many hot/cold cycles under the hood that its material weakens and allows the systems vaccuum to collaspe the elbow. I could find this assembly at the dealer only and for a cost of about $32. The motorcraft pcv was $6 or $7. I am told however that the dealer is asking nearly $200 to install the valve. I havent asked them, so I hope this is an urban myth. Good luck.

What is the symptoms of a bad PCV valve?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Generally speaking the symptom of a bad PCV valve is a buildup of pressure inside the crankcase. If it is bad enough it can cause the engine oil to come out through the dip stick tube. If you pull the dipstick out and hear a release of pressure that is probably an indication of a bad PCV valve.

The common way to check the PCV valve is to take it out and shake it. If it has a rattle then it is supposed to be good, no rattle it is assumed to be plugged up and no longer working. I am not certain if that is still a valid check.

What is a PCV valve?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation.

They are usually right in plain sight on top of the valve cover. If you had one you probably could have changed it yourself in about 30 seconds or less.

A PCV valve helps keep a constant pressure within the engine block by releasing oil fumes when they get to a certain pressure and sending them into the fuel system to be reburned with the gas.

While they can be inexpensive, they can be very hard to locate and remove on several makes of cars and trucks. Some are internal and cannot be replaced, meaning they are located inside the valve cover.

The PCVs that can be replaced should be replaced every 15 to 60 thousand miles depending on the make and engine you have.

Shop around for a better price than you paid, $12.00 is a little steep.

It stands for positive crankcase ventilation. And what they told u was right about replacing it. All it does is prevent condensation build up and burn fuel fimes that get by the rings. The condensation will build up and create sludge and that is a bad thing because it will block oil galleries and return holes and ur engine will run oil dry and it will be fried.

pos.crankcase vent keeps pressures even in your eng.returns fumes to the intake threw the air filter houseing.easy to check shake it if it rattles it should be good put it back

The answers are correct as to what it does, and how it is to be checked, though usually the "prescribed" way to check it is not just shaking, but trying to suck, or blow, air in both directions (it should be one-way).

However I have never heard of routinely replacing this item, and have known some cheapskates actually "revitalizing" them by spraying them with engine cleaner.

As to price, $9 is too cheap for a professional oil (and filter?) change, so they nailed you for the valve, by its cost, and probably by its need.

There isn't any free lunch.

buy one and keep it in your glove box. change it every other year. it is an emmission control device. it takes blow by and directs back to be used again. it is cheap insurance and prevents sludge. change it every time you get a tune up also change your airfilter out at the same time. If your airfilter is oil soaked, it probably due to a worn pcv valve. change the valve first then change the airfilter.

The PCV Valve, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is an emission control device that routes unburned crankcase blowby gases back into the intake manifold where they can be reburned. The PCV system is one of the oldest emission control devices, and also one of the most beneficial. Besides totally eliminating crankcase emissions as a source of air pollution, the constant recirculation of air through the crankcase helps remove moisture which otherwise would cause sludge to form. Thus the PCV valve extends the life of the oil and engine. The PCV valve requires little maintenance. The valve and filter should be replaced somewhere around 30,000 to 50,000 miles(see the vehicle owners manual for service intervals).

PCV is an acronym for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. This valve is needed to relieve the pressure built up in the crankcase that is created by the heating of the air inside the engine. If this valve were not present and the pressure went unchecked, it would blow out the seals and gaskets inside your engine.

PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation. This replaceable valve replaced the vent pipe on the engine, this got rid of the fumes and or pressure that builds up in the crankcase, nowadays the crankcase does not vent into the environment. with the PCV valve these fumes are returned to the intake manifold and are mixed in with the fuel intake stroke to be burned and so create a cleaner exhaust.

Pcv valveI don't think a car has been built in the last 40 years that doesn't have a PCV valve. My 1965 Galaxie had one, but my 64 Ford pickup didn't. PCV means "Positive Crankcase Ventilation", in other words actively sucking junk out of the crankcase rather than just letting it be vented to the air.

The PCV valve allows unburned stuff that blows by the piston to be collected and re-burned rather than just vented to the air, without causing your engine to stall out at idle. This results in a serious reduction in air pollution at virtually no cost, which is why it was the first emissions control device employed.

Look on top of the valve cover. There should be a knob sticking out with a small diameter rubber hose attached to it. It will be inserted in a rubber grommet. You can just pull it out of the valve cover. If it's clogged it will be unnecessarily blowing junk into the air; if it's leaking, it will seriously foul up operation of your engine, especially at idle. They cost about two bucks and you can change it with your bare hands. Replace often. The book says 24000 miles/24 months. I always write the replacement date on them with a Sharpie so I can remember when I replaced it last.
