They're to help the jumpers see the ground and see how close they are to the ground. Flat light on snow can make it very difficult to judge distance.

Ski jumping of Olympic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes , ski jumping is in Olympics, but not for women. It is the only event in the Olympics--summer or winter--that does not allow women. (The last event in the Olympic Summer Games to include women is boxing, which will be included in London 2012.) By 2014, the women will have had two World Championships and will have World Cup status. The hope is that the IOC will vote to allow the women into Sochi 2014 sometime in late 2010, which will finally make the Olympics gender equal, although men still have many more events than women in many sports. For example, in ski jumping, the men have three events--the K90, K120, and team event. If the women are voted in to Sochi 2014, they will only be approved for the K90.

Who is the best player in ski jumping?

Asked by Wiki User

A common measurement on how good individual skiers are is often the total number of World Cup races won during the skiing career. These include the downhill,Super G,Slalom,

Giant Slalom and the combined.

Today it is Bode Miller , raced in over 400 World Cups against the best, including Digago

and Aksel. In the past there was Raich and of course Jean Claude Killy.

"He doesn't train all summer, he comes back and wins three medals. Only Bode can do it," said Liechtenstein's Marco Buechel, competing at his sixth Olympics. "If I wouldn't train all summer and come back, I would crash every second gate. His way of skiing is unique. His talent is immense."

Ingemar Stenmark leads everyone with 86 World Cup wins but only won the GS and Slalom. Only Bode,Kjetil Andre Aamodt,Marc Girardelli and Pirmin Zurbriggen has wins

in each discipline.

However, this is only for the racing discipline, and there is an equally strong argument that today's best skier is a freeskier-one who competes in pipe, slopestyle, big air, freeride competitions, or simply films segments for ski movies. Along this line, a case could be made for Candide Thovex, who has won X Games gold in superpipe, slopestyle, big air, as well as the 2010 Freeride World Tour title, or Tanner Hall, who, like Thovex, has won the X Games trifecta as well as proved himself in numerous film segments. Needless to say, both men are legends up there with Miller, Killy, and any racer.

Note for 2010:Competition change

The only competition change for the 2010 Vancouver Games involves the super-combined. The super-combined incorporates one run each of downhill and slalom, with medals being awarded to the three fastest racers based on their combined times in the two runs. The predecessor to the super-combined - the combined - incorporated one downhill run and two slalom runs.

Simon Dumont is definitely the best at all freestyle

I think its in terms of distance but doesn't that depend on how fast the person goes? Ive heard people say that jumps are measured from the tip of the jump to the begining of the landing but that doesn't seem to accurate to me.
