User Avatar

In Gnosticism, the IAO is a sacred name or divine formula representing the supreme god beyond all existence. What does Agnostic mean?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Literally, agnostic means "without knowledge". Agnostic usually refers to those that claim agnosticism.

Generally, agnosticism is the view in which it is unknown or unknowable whether supernatural forces, such as gods and other deities, are at work. Most agnostics will neither claim that God or gods exist nor will they claim that they do not exist.

Answer:

I agree with above, agnosticism is neither the refusal or belief in a God, but rather a belief that either or is a possibility.

What percent of US citizens are agnostic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In 2012, the Pew Research Center conducted a study, concluding that six percent (6%) of the population within the United States claimed to be either Agnostic or Atheist. The accompanying graph, which can be found on the link below (reference page 9 of the study), would indicate that approximately half of those polled would fall into the "Agnostic" catagory.

Thus, it can be safely concluded that approximately 3% of the population actively identifies with being Agnostic.

Were any US presidents agnostic?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

We may never really know how many American presidents have been atheists, given the potential political cost of admitting to not being a Christian. However, the third American President, Thomas Jefferson, questioned the miracles of the New Testament. Using a razor and paste, he produced a thin volume which is called "The Jefferson Bible". This included the philosophical and moral teachings of Jesus but omitted all claims to miracles or to his divinity. Whether or not Jefferson consciously thought of himself as an atheist, his actions indicate that this is what he actually was.

What is someone who doesn't believe in god called?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A person who rejects the existence of any God is an Atheist.

A person who is ignorant of the God of Abraham is a heathen.

A person who worships other Gods is a pagan.

A person who doesn't believe in god at all is called an athiest (a- without, theism-beliefs on god).

However, there are also agnostics, people who believe god MIGHT exist, but haven't reached a conclusion.

The above answer is inadequate due to the fact that it is written in only Christian terms (i.e. "heathen" and "pagan"). The question is about the belief in the concept of God in general, not the Christian interpretation. To identify a follower of any religion that worships a god (or gods) other than the God of Abraham as "pagan" is to lump a vast array of diverse beliefs into one category; basically, you're saying that to have religion, you are either Christian or "other."

The simple answer to the question is this: If you believe that there is no god, you are an athiest. If you believe in the possibility of a god but do not believe that humans are capable of knowing for sure, you are an agnostic.
If you're refering to God as the deity in Christianity, then both atheists and agnostics fit in this category.

An Atheist denies the existence of a supreme being.

An Agnostic is someone who believes that there might be a God, but this and the essential nature of things are designed to be unknown.
An atheist is the opposite of a theist.

The theist believes there is evidence for the existence of their favorite god.

The atheist does not.

It would be illogical for the atheist to "deny" the existence of something for which there is no evidence. Atheism is merely the lack of a belief.

Knowledge is absolute. Since nobody can know with absolute certainty no gods exist, everyone is agnostic. So the so-called "agnostic" has the same lack of knowledge as the atheist or theist has. It's just commonly accepted that an agnostic does not commit either way.
Atheist: The conviction that there is definitely no God.

Agnostic:
The belief that one cannot know for sure if there really is a God.

Non-theist:
Indifference to the subject of God, or one who can't be bothered to think about whether or not God exists.

someone who does not believe in God is not necessarily an atheist, because there are many other religions that he or she may belong to, although these generally will have a God or gods as part of their system, with the possible exception of Buddhism. But, someone who does not believe in any God or gods at all, is an atheist.
Someone who doesn't believe in gods is called an atheist.

A:2

If you don't believe in any kind of God, you are an atheist. If you believe in some kind of omnipotent deity but do not believe that man has any way of knowing the nature of this being, you are an agnostic.

Why do people believe in agnosticism?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Agnosticism is just the belief that it is not possible to know with certainty something about a certain subject. The subject it is commonly applied to is Religion and God, but it could be applied to any subject.

As far as I am concerned it is simply a recognition of the finite limits inherent to being human and I consider myself agnostic on certain subjects because I do recognize and admit my own limitations. If I did not consider myself agnostic on those subjects and claimed certain knowledge of them it would be a display of extreme pride and arrogance.

What does the pantheist worldview think about sexuality?

User Avatar

Asked by DainneNeal

Atheism is not a unified system of belief and as such the views on sexuality vary from atheist to atheist. Most atheists would say they believe in Evolution and so humans have evolved with sexuality for reproduction, the pleasure being a side effect to make the urge to seek out a mate desirable. As for ethics in sexuality these vary. But the individual thoughts about everything else regarding sex (sex without commitment, homosexuality, abortion) vary.

AnswerThere is no general "atheistic" view on sexuality. The only "given" that can be said about atheists and their general view of sexuality is that it is not influenced by religious rules, religious doctrines or religious dogma.

What do Agnostics celebrate?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Agnostics celebrate any and every holiday that they choose to celebrate, but they probably don't celebrate religious holidays for the same reasons that believers do. For example, many agnostics celebrate Christmas, just because it is a major secular holiday (as well as a religious one). What prevents an agnostic from celebrating Thanksgiving? It is a wonderful holiday.

What do agnostic people believe when they die?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Agnosticism is not a single, unified 'religion' or philosophy. Probably, the majority of Agnostics have no particular belief when it comes to the afterlife, but some may have beliefs that are related to a humanistic or scientific understanding of the world. The question is a little like asking: What do non-monarchists believe about foreign trade? People who are not monarchists will include a huge part of the world population with widely varying opinions and beliefs. You don't have to all political beliefs in common in order to be numbered among non-monarchists. It is the same with agnostics, or non sky divers.

What does an agnostic person believe?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

"Agnostic" means "not knowing" and that is generally what we believe. We don't know what is out there, and some of us, frankly, don't care, but either way it is impossible to know for sure while we're alive. There may be a Supreme Being, there may be five of them, or there may not be one, but we don't know and we don't think it impacts our lives very much anyway.

Why are agnostics unsure about believing in God?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some people are unsure whether God exists or not because there is no direct evidence

for him.

Another opinion People are unsure that God exists because they do not wish to accept the eyewitness testimony of those who have had dealings with them, despite the great amount of supporting evidence. In terms of inconsistency, many of these people have no trouble accepting the existence of many major ancient personages but doubt Jesus existence despite far greater weight of evidence. Opinion I for one is now not sure if there really is a god. How can a god allow children to go hungry? How can a good god allow children to die of hunger and diseases? How can a good god kill all his own creation sparing only Noah and his family. How can a good god commit genocide to all who has never heard of him? How can a good god assign sin to all mankind for the mere act of eating a certain fruit that he put in the garden himself? These are the kind of questions that prompted me to be unsure in the existence of god Opinion I would rather turn the question around: why are some people sure that a god exists? I have no idea, as there is no evidence to suggest that this is the case.

Answer Many see the existence of a god as unsubstantiated; the burden of proof is not on the skeptic to show absence, but on the believer to show presence. Because of the mere nature of any deity, it is also impossible to show such proof, and hence no rational belief is possible. This leads many to not believe.

Others follow the contradiction reached by the properties claimed about many deities reflected in their actions and commands. A good example is the JudaeoChristian god; how can a benevolent and omnipotent deity allow such harm to come to "His" chosen people?

Counterarguments such as "life is a test" are then themselves countered by the simple fact that a benevolent intelligence would not test, but instead apply their power to help; after all, how many tests must you pass before being admitted into a school or being given a degree? Inconsistencies and gaps in the logic abound in most religions, not just those two.

Yet further reasoning is that a believer has faith because they are "called" or "have their eyes opened" (or however it is described by a particular group). If one does not have their eyes opened, how are they supposed to believe? Thus, there is no point in attempting to believe if you are not called; if you are called then you would believe and the problem is dealt with. In effect, you cannot change something, so allow it to either change or not change as it will. "Can't win, don't try, wait for a consolation prize".

Scientific or imperical proof requires recreation of events by controlling certain factors, and since God cannot be controlled or predicted it is impossible to aquire proof which would suit these methods.

Why the wise men not return to king Herod after seeing jesus?

Explain why unanswered prayers may lead some people to become atheists?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Unanswered prayers can lead to atheism because mos people become desperate in there search for god. They however believe that if god can't answer their prayers then he can't exist. This however is a wrong way to take it because you don't know if the prayer will be answered later in life.

Can an agnostic marry a Catholic in the Catholic Church?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I believe the "rules" say that offspring must be bought up in the Catholic faith; in practice I'm sure it happens all the time! I recall a priest being interviewed who said that when he discussed faith with parishioners there was an unsaid feeling that the parishioner didn't want to admit how little he believed in the doctrine and the priest equally didn't want say how little he believed. So I imagine that there are many weddings in church where none of the main protaganists reallybelieve.

Answer:

My fiance is Catholic, and I'm Agnostic. We are both aware that there may be trouble for us if we try to marry in the Catholic church, as they are very strict with their guidelines in requiring that practicing Catholics must marry someone in the faith. This is why we are choosing to marry with a Justice of Peace, less hassle.

What are the characteristics of an agnostic person?

User Avatar

Asked by Kyah586

Thoughtful, firm (about belief).

Answer:

There are no special characteristics of an agnostic except for his opinion that he (or she) does not know enough about god(s) to take firm position on their existence. Even this criteria can vary from "doesn't know and is searching for an aswer" to "doesn't know and doesn't care because the answer is unimportant"

What is agnostics?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

An agnostic feels that humans are not equiped to know the truth in matters such as God and the future life with which Christianity and other religions are concerned. Or, if not impossible, at least impossible at the present time. Whether or not there is a deity, there is no way to know anything about her/him.

Agnostics don't know if there is a God, or gods, or any higher power at all, and they also don't think it can be disproven/proven that there is one. Most don't really care.

Agnosticism is a coherent and reasoned position and it is not the position of people who may be experiencing a crisis of faith. It is natural even for strong believers among the people of faith to sometimes experience doubts. Agnostics are not people who are experiencing pangs of doubt or confusion. They are not 'on the fence' as some characterize them, since they appear to be somewhere between faith and atheism.

In general, virtually all western religions and some eastern religions as well have fundamentalist underpinnings that involve certainty regarding some basic questions. This positional certainty is based on divine revelation. There is certainty in the existence of a deity, and about the purpose and methods of the deity. There is usually certainty about the fate of nonbelievers, and about how to become one of those who will experience heaven after death. There is also certainty about what groups or individuals are hated by the deity and will eventually be brought to doom. These convictions cannot be directly and convincingly connected to any form of physical evidence. It is in the very nature of faith that convictions are held even though the object of faith is hoped for and unseen. Faith is absolute belief in the complete absence of evidence.

On the other hand, atheists are those who claim the same level of certainty held by people of faith, but their certainty is that there is no deity.

Perhaps some atheists don't realize that their certainty puts them in league with those who claim a metaphysical connection, certainty in the complete absence of evidence, that is itself a possible argument in favor of the divine. On the one hand is faith given by the deity that leads to salvation, and on the other is the faith, different in form only and not substance, that no such deity exists. What is the source of such faith? Certainty of this kind cannot come from reason alone, or from physical evidence. Recall the debate over proving that there are NO WMD's in Iraq. "Give me the hard evidence that there are NO WMD's in Iraq!"... What?... The only thing that can be proven is that there ARE WMD's, if indeed there are.

The heart of the dilemma is the nature of knowledge and of certainty. For those who have received saving faith, the reality, experience or 'sensorium' of the spiritual and metaphysical is as undeniable as dirt. For those who have yet to receive such faith, like myself, the spiritual and metaphysical claims of people of faith appear indistinguishable from fantasy, myth or madness. The Greek scriptures talk about this. The things that are spiritually discerned are foolishness to the unbeliever. No argument from me on that point.

So I conclude that it is as foolish to claim certainty that people of faith are completely wrong as it is to believe their teachings. It matters little to me whether I am considered an agnostic or an atheist. What is more important is to wonder about what can be known, and to what extent can we be certain of it.

Perhaps the difference between agnostics and atheists comes down to the approach to spiritual and metaphysical realms, the realms of theology and some philosophy. In the absence of evidence, and knowing that I do not have the faith that people of faith are supposed to possess, I can only conclude that spirituality and metaphysics are largely unknown and currently unknowable, and probably result from the neurological entropy that comes along with our overpowered brains. I cannot conclude with certainty that those realms are completely unreal. I can hold these beliefs without a single urge to force believers or atheists to come around to my way of thinking.

An agnostic is a person who does not know whether or not there is a supreme being - a god - who controls the universe.

The Greek word "gnōstós" means "known: the prefix "a-" means "not". So "agnostic" means "not known", and in generally means "a person who does not know" - and in some cases, "a person who does not care". The word agnostic generally refers to a supreme being, but is sometimes used in technology; a program that is "platform-agnostic" doesn't care what kind of computer it is running on.
