Why do purebred dogs sometimes have genetic defects?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This is mainly due to inbreeding and breeding to extremes for looks and not soundness. For example, the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed standard stipulates that it must have a backwards ridge of hair along its back to be shown, when in fact this is a deformity caused by mild spina biffida. If you are planning on buying a pedigree dog, make sure it has had all relevant screenings and tests for breed specific diseases.

I would recomend Blue Buffalo or Nutrish. You can buy these at Petco or PetSmart. If the Papillon is three yearsold or older, you should also get DentaSticks. The dog might have gum disease if he or she is three or older. And with Blue Buffalo, they have basics or regular.

Is a papillon related to a border collie?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This is a hard one. After doing research I could not pinpoint a direct link between them. Though a lot of collie breeds can trace their roots to spaniel breeds. I found broad non-specific breed information about spaniels being bred to get certain traits in a collie. A genetic test would have to be run on the individual dogs to see where their genetics can be traced.

How many pounds are papillon dogs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer:papillons usually cost around 100-500 dollars- if you buy from the right place. i wouldn't buy from someone who would say 1000 or something. A papillon is usually 5-800 dollars. I got mine at a shelter so she was a lot cheaper. I know she isn't a mutt because she was previously a breeding Papillon. The best idea would be to look around at shelters.
