Why do welsh corgis get there tails cut of when they are puppies?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They don't, Pembroke Welsh Corgi's are born with out tails, if you see a corgi with a tail, you are looking at a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. They have big bushy tails, and Pembroke's have tails but there tails are small invisible nubs.

What does a sable Pembroke welsh corgi look like?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Sable is best described as red & white (most common corgi coloring) with a black dusting around the head and back area. Think tricolor but very faint on the black coloring. I think it comes off as one of the best colors for the pem- I get very excites when ever I end up with a puppy born this color since it isn't seen as often as the other pembroke colors.

The Sable Pembroke Welsh Corgi coat looks very similar to a standard German Sheppard coat.

What is the difference between a cardigain or a Pembroke Welsh Corgi?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Neither is better than the other. It all depends upon your lifestyle and the type of dog that best suits you.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis usually are more stockier than Pembrokes. The biggest difference that the general public sees is that Cardigans have tails and Pembrokes do not. But they both are separate breeds coming from separate lines. Cardigans come from the Teckel family (where Dachshunds and Basset's are from) while Pembrokes come from the Spitz family.

Cardigans are less social than Pembrokes, have more coat, are slightly taller and a bit more calmer.

Pembrokes are extremely social (they've never met a stranger), are smaller and have a more energy than Cardigans.

Both need good socialization, daily grooming and a good run every day.

Why do Welsh corgis have no tail?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Ummmmm... no

WRONG. Generally, Pembroke Corgis are BORN with long tails but breeders dock them within a couple of days of birth unless they are bobtails then they are born with a short 'bob'.

The reason why they are 'docked' (tail removed) is so it doesn't get damaged when working as Cattle herders. Docking is now illegal in England and most of Europe unless the pup is registered as a working dog. Most corgis you will see now DO have long bushy tails - which makes them look Foxy!

Do corgis like water?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some corgis can swim, however many cannot. Usually they start out ok swimming straight, but then tip over when they turn. All corgi owners should have their corgi securely on lead the first time they give it a try so they can pull the dog out safely if necessary.

How much is a pembroke welsh corgi?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

it depends how old there are and how much the owner sells them for. I got mine for $175 and $350.

It really depends on where you are geographically and how good and reputable the breeder is. If you are buying puppies here in the United States from a reputable breeder, you will pay anywhere from $1,000-$2500 depending on if your in the North or South. The quality of the dog also plays a major factor. A fluffy will go for the least, while a show level dog that you can breed will be at the high end.

Are pembroke Welsh corgi good with children?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Pembroke Welsh Corgis love people. Mine especiaally loves children. They do have a tendency to nip at people's heels, but this is generally an attempt to herd them (they are a breed of heelers), not an act of aggression. If addressed early, they can be easily trained out of it. Like many small dogs, they have a tendency to want to jump up on people, and must be trained not to do this . . . especially since the average corgi's front paw will be right at kneecap level when they jump.

Corgi's love people and form a particularly strong bond with their family members. They can be stand-offish to strangers if they are not socialized often but generally are very social animals.

How fast can Pembroke Welsh Corgis run?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Pembroke Welsh Corgis, despite their short limbs, can be quite fast. This is because they run with their spines and trunk more than their legs. A fit and trim corgi can reach about 23 mph in a sprint on clear, level ground. That's actually slightly faster than the average across all dog breeds. They're not terribly good jumpers, though.

Does a Welsh corgi grow big?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To answer, "does a Welsh Corgi grow big," depends on what your definition of "big" is.

Also, if by "big" you mean weight, or do you mean height, or even length?

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC.org), the standards for the Welsh Corgi breed are that Pembroke Welsh Corgi is about 10-12 inches at the shoulder, and not more than 30 pounds for males, and 28 lbs for females.

For the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the breed is slightly taller 10.5-12.5 inches at the shoulder and from 30-38lbs for the male and 25-34lbs for the female

Originating in Pembrokeshire, Wales, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an enchanting dog whose background is steeped in folklore. According to Welsh legend, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi sprang from the lairs of fairies and elves!

There are historians who say that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is descended from Vallhunds, Swedish cattle dogs that were brought to Wales by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries. Others think they may have been descended from dogs that were brought to Wales by Flemish weavers in the 12th century.
