It is a story about a family and their two dogs (hounds of some sort) living in the Ozarks in the 19th century.
The Red Fern in the story is a symbol of sacredness; as according to legend only an angel can plant a red fern and wherever one grows is holy ground.
It is Billy before he got his two dogs.
Billy had worked at the tree for days. He had made progress, but he eas very discouraged. He had to do it for his dogs, but was about to quit when he remebered what is mom told him about God he will meet ypu half way there. He prayed to God and asked him to help. As soon as he finished, a great wind came and blew the tree over.
The book 'Where The Red Fern Grows' is about a boy who lives in the Ozark mountain country of Oklahoma. He wants hounds very bad, and saves money to buy them. The rest of the book is about the adventuers they get into together.
He dislikes life in his parent's cramped New York city apartment with his eight brothers and sisters, and therefore runs away to the Catskill Mountains.
Billy, Rubin, and Raine are in the forest/woods with Old Dan and Little Ann trying to hunt and treed a ghost coon.
i can definitely say that where the red fern grows is a very sad book. The ending is where most of the sad things happen like in the last 2 or 3 chapters...hope that this helps (:
