Get your garageman to do an engine diagnosis. Mine has been on since 2001 and it is a 2001 Focus... otherwise don't let it bother you too much, because it's probably a computer malfunction. You can try disconnecting your positive battery cable for a couple hours and then hook it back up because it may "reset" itself.

That's a good tip in the preceding paragraph. I've experienced the same issue two days ago. The engine management warning light came on after a spell of extremely hot and humid weather (36C ++ degrees with humidity around the 70 - 80% mark). My focus is a fleet car, and I called up the road assist mob who said to keep an eye on it, and if it stayed on, to take it to the dealer (or mechanic if you're a private owner) for full diagnostic check. There's a possibility the malfunction was caused by the extreme heat playing havoc on the electronics, therefore causing an error during the initial pre-start self check. The funny thing is, after a relatively cool night (approximately 15 - 16C minimum that night), the problem resolved itself and I haven't seen the malfunction light come on since.

The test will be within the next week or so, as here in Perth, Western Australia it's forecast to be in the high 30s and humid again come middle of next week. I'm half expecting the issue to recur again, and if so, will definitely be getting fleet service to have it checked out. Apart from that, the car drives well, and fuel economy hasn't been affected too much (still getting approx 9.3L/100km).

COMMENT to one of the sentences used "Shouldn't Worry You TOO Much"

about An ENGINE LIGHT Being ON and STAYING ON.

Sounds friendly enough - and then you've added some informative information to use for diagnosis etc etc.

So this isn't a personal attack.

More an informative thing of my own.

things to try still attached above. So this isn't a personal attack. It's a group-informative-state-of-things-in-other-States-of-The-Union-thing.

When this fricken Engine Light MUST Bother Us More than we would like. We are Forced to have it trily bother us to the nth degree.

When Somone's Engine Light pops ON - and Stays ON - This May Indeed be a MAJOR Problem. The factor being Which State they live in.. and The State's Car Inspections.

For those of us who dwell in New York State - There's a YEARLY "Safety Inspection" - and other States have similar Inspections and others have them Bi-Yearly. And they are all different.

- Since having an Engine Light On is an automatic F A I L on New York State's Safety Inspection. - Which used to Truly Be, a 'Safety Inspection': Were lights all working - tires not balder than your Grand Father's head - you know, SAFETY THINGS.

Then They All Got GREEDY.

AND IT GOT SERIOUS. Seriously Expensive.

in my experience... unless it's the gas cap that'/s simply on crooked - and YOU'RE the one who noticed it NOT the mechanic who'll bill you 400$ for some Other Issue or setup a problem that will occur a week/month from now so you go back to them for some REAL Money Spending (hey, that's been my experience. Some are honest mechanics - but I haven't met that many, not in California and not here in upstate NY.- -

So in NY with their every Year - Every Single Yearly Testing - You won't get that inspection sticker - A Sticker that changes color monthly and is About 3x5 and Taped right up on your Windshield for easy-viewing... and trust me they're looking for these expired ones - Got one on Jan. 1st when I had an Engine Light I couldn't get off, so I couldn't get a Sticker.

it's an easy pull-over for them (though they won't admit it) It's a free breath analyzer when you answer their "so where're ya headed to".. Free Search of your car since most honest folks or kids are usually to scared to refuse or don't want to seem suspicious, thinking they won't call your bluff - But They will. They always do. And you'd be surprised what either you or your friends have lost down the side of the seats that THEY'LL be finding in 2-3 minutes... or what your own kid stashed under the seat-covers for easy access.

Yikes.

At best this Yearly State Inspection, the one you'll fail because the engine light just won't go out is a free Sobriety Test for the Police - a ticket you'll have to pay later on for sure regardless (still gotta go to work or Church, right?)

- - and a free Car Search and wasted time included ALL B/C of An Engine Light that "you shouldn't worry at all about." Maybe someone should list the States of the people who should be worried just so we know who to condescend.

Since most most of us who aren't pulling in huge salaries, a YEARLY INSPECTION - No Longer just checking of the lights side mirrors and cracks in the windshield.. But a Money Sinker. For who's got an 8 year old car that's running perfectly tuned and without any engine problems at all? Not talking safety problems but ANY computer problems, misfires every so often etc etc. Oh and for the poor with old cars? The older vehicles that WERE NOT turned to junk by Obama's frickin-fabulous trade in your used car for a new one campaign, junking the used one the poorer folk like me need to buy... well now if that Engine Light goes on you rarely get out of there without a good 5-900 bucks on a GOOD day! I've seen Sears average bills when a Engine's Light on to go between 800 and 1500 depending - and what are you going to do? Car's running fine - But you can't afford to make it run like New?

So to EVER SAY "Don't Worry About it - Leave It" - It's condescending and very unhelpful. Yes, lots of times it's programmed to come on at certain mileages - Fine. Good Info.

But if someone wants to know how to get that Light OFF - How 'bout someone assume they wouldn't be taking the time to search the internet just for kicks if it weren't an import question - for them.

Just felt the need to add that in here.

No offense to the posters - It's nice to see people trying to help. But just remember, different States and different issues if they mean little to nothing to you in the end - might mean a whole lot to someone else. So why don't we lose that "no need to bother with fixing THAT issue" since really you don't know at all if that be true or untrue.

Respectfully,

Jack
