Mr. Slate
Fred's most well-known boss is Mr. Slate. His first name has been Sylvester, Nathan, Oscar, and George. Some people think those are all his different first/middle names, but he is usually just called them one at a time, and it seems to have been a running joke on the show to change the first name around. :) Over the course of the show, Fred had other bosses (or the boss had other names). Other names were Mr. Boulder, J. J. Granite, an unnamed boss with white hair (in "The Big Tycoon" episode), and Mr. Rockhead.
The cast of The Rube Boss - 1913 includes: Bud Duncan Fred Mace

A mutual contact is a person that you, and a potential employer, both know. Think of it as 'Mutual Friends' on facebook or another social networking site, you know them, and a couple friends of yours know them, so you might want to be friends with them too. For example, say that You are friends with Fred. Fred works at ABC Electronics. George is Fred's boss at ABC Electronics. So if you wanted to work at ABC, Fred might mention you to George, his boss. This makes Fred the mutual contact.
When his boss, Mr. Slate, sent him back for his diploma, or he would have been fired.
his name was Mr. Slate though in early episodes the name and appearance of Fred's boss varied. He was sometimes referred to as Mr. Rockhead or Mr. J.J. Granite prior to settling on Mr. Slate.
