The inflation bulb for a sphygmomanometer injects air into the blood pressure cuff. That's it. The measurement of blood pressure is achieved by the mercurial monometer attached to the cuff, or in some cases, directly off the bulb.

The cuff is inflated, applying steadily rising pressure to the blood vessels in the arm. As the blood is cut off and can no longer be heard, a reading is taken of the pressure in the cuff. This is the systolic pressure (the first number given in your blood pressure). As pressure is slowly released from the cuff blood begins to flow again. Once the pulse is heard again, the second diastolic reading is taken.

Sphygmomanometer means blood pressure apparatus. You can directly measure the blood pressure with the help of sphygmomanometer. Blood pressure has got the very simple design. On one hand the preessure in the cuff in raised, the same pressure is transmitted to column of the Mercury. Mercury is 13.6 times heavier than the water. So you can measure the blood pressure with very small apparatus. It almost never cheats. It is easy to repair and easy for maintain.
