In Russia and the surrounding associated arease.g Belorussia, and Germany with its allies, no is the answer. In Germany they were being send to death camps like Jews due to the Nazi idea of 'The Final Solution' , the ethnic cleansing of millions of Jews and other ethnic minorities now known as the 'Holocaust' Most of the gypsies in the other axis controlled territories were terrified as they also were sent off to these death-camps or concentration camps in places like Stara Gradiska in Yugoslavia or Balanovka in Romania . They did however, take part in resistance groups throughout Nazi Germany and its allies but they did not fight as a military unit. In Russia, most of the Gypsies where killed when there was mass genocide amongst the Jewish and Traveller communities as Communism rose up into power. In the Allied side, many of the Gypsies did end up fighting due to conscription ( men between 17/18-35) where called up to fight for their country (as far as i can gather) Hoped this helped a bit

Many lived in the forests of Europe. A great number were picked up and sent to concentration camps where they were gassed and cremated so they lived in "castles in the air". Some helped fight the war.

It's to be estimated between 600,000 and 1.5 million. Reason for these differences is that the gypsies count was never counted for as they were never popular before WW2.
