The oldest records of Christmas are from 336 AD. At least that's the oldest record of a Christian celebration of Jesus' birth. A modern person probably would not have recognized the modern day version of Christmas from those Roman celebrations, however, since they were derived from the existing Roman festival of Saturnalia.

The modern traditions of Christmas incorporate traditions from the German festival of Yule (hence why things like "Yuletide" and the Yule log are still used). It's hard to know how old Yule is, however, because it was already old by the time anybody wrote about it.

What you would recognize as Christmas today probably didn't exist until later in the 9th century. It may be a disappointing answer, but there probably never was a "first" Christmas. Solstice celebrations are old, much older than the written word and probably older than any religion of civilization of which we have records. Cultural norms change over time. It took many generations of Romans for Saturnalia to become what it was, many generations of Germans for Yule to become what it was, and many generations of cultural overlap and cultural drift for Saturnalia, Yule, and Christmas to collectively become what we have now. It may not feel like it, but traditions are still changing even now. A Christmas from 1920 would have felt very different from one in 2020, and 2120 will bring still more changes.

It was celebrated before Jesus was born, though it did not reach its current form until Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, and even then certain customs (such as the Yule Log, mistletoe, and the current Christmas tree) from the barbarian tribes that invaded Rome were added afterwards. It's a combination of several pagan feasts including Saturnalia; whose origin is astrological in nature (in traditional ancient Astrology Saturn ruled the consecutive signs of Capricorn and Aquarius), Brumalia; from the Latin word for "short", Bacchanalia which honored the Greek god Dionysus whose Roman name was Bacchus, and The Birth of the Unconquered Sun, which honored the Persian sun god Mithras. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, the bishops who ran the church believed that they would never be able to get the enormous number of pagan "converts" to give up observing these festivals, so they decided to "Christianize" them. Instead of being "The Birth of the Unconquered Sun" it became the official birthdate of the Son of God, whose actual birthday most likely occured in late September or early October.

When Jesus was born

Another Opinion
The celebration of Christmas started with the Roman Catholic church around 300 AD. There was no celebration of the birth of Christ until then. Protestants started celebrating it much later.

Answer:

It is thought that the early Christians did not widely celebrate the birth of Jesus. This is most likely true since the primary focus was on His life, crucifixion, and particularly His resurrection. There certainly were some early celebrations. Early writings including a "feast calendar" written in 243AD indicate that there were some celebrations in the third century and perhaps in the second century. Christmas celebrations did not gain widespread prominence however until the Middle Ages or starting from around 400AD.

Christmas is a time of celebration for Christianity. I am a Christian and thoroughly know the nativity story. Jesus Christ was born in the Spring according to historians and bible scholars. It took the Wisemen almost 3 years of Christ's life to find him by following the star. When they got to Jesus they gave him three gifts. So you might be wondering the significants of Christmas. Jesus was born in a manger outside=Christmas Tree

A star was what the wise men followed to find Jesus=Christmas lights

Jesus was given gifts when the wise men found him=Christmas Gifts.

Christmas has been created into a tradition around the world. But the main importance is the day that Jesus Christ was born.

Hope this helps!

Merry Christmas!!!

Saint Nicolas was a man who gave home made toys to poor children in his village. From that tradition we got Santa Claus and the ritual of exchanging gifts.
