Veterans are those individuals that served in the armed forces of their country. They put their lives at risk, voluntarily or by being drafted, to serve their country. Their service provides security to the country in many ways, allowing those at home to be safe and maintain their rights. * Veterans is a term more used in the USA and Canada than in Britain to describe people who have served in the armed forces. See following question, "What is the definition of a veteran?"

Some stay in the active reserves and so are available for military service in the event of a a war or national emergency. Some share their military experiences with high school students and others. Most of them serve the same as non-veterans in their jobs and their community service.

It's not really what the veterans do, as much as what we should do. We respect the men and women who fought for our rights and freedom by giving them a whole day based on them. And the veterans will probably pay their respects to those who have died while serving the army and who have died after coming home.

How did the American Legion get started and who and why was it started?

The "American Legion" was created by WWI veterans in about 1919. The "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (VFW) was created by Spanish-American Veterans of 1898, and is our oldest Veterans group. The "American Veterans" (AMVETS) was created by WWII veterans. Originally, these veteran groups were open to only their own veterans, but as time went by they opened to all "qualified" veterans.
