John Hancock was President of the Second Continental Congress from May 24th, 1775 until October 19, 1777. He presided over the debates on Independence. His wealth very much aided the cause and fed many families through rough times during the Revolutionary War. On July 4th, 1776 he was the first delegate to sign the Declaration of Independenc. He signed his name so large and boldly "so that King George III can read it without his glasses." Today, his name is often used as a synonym for the word signature.
