How did art start?

It pretty much started when cavemen painted on walls. But if you are talking about contemporary art, it started around the Renaissance when artists broke away from their low societal positions in only painting church-commissioned bible scenes and began to express their individual emotions rather than just illustrating The Bible. Art as such can be traced back to the Neanderthal period. Paintings of animals have been found in cave across the world and as yet archaeologist have not found anything that is supported by the same amount of evidence to show its beginnings prior to this

though it is probably not true, the tall tale behind the etymology of the word ART came from the nickname of caveman who invented it, Arthurous Glumphus, but the cavemen couldn't say his name so they called it ART, but of course this probably isn't true ART RULES!

Cavemen were the first ones to create drawings of any sort, so you could say that art started in the same time period as them. But it all depends on what type of art you are referencing too.
