They sometimes put the animals in small cages which doesn't allow them much space to move around. In some zoo's, people put animals in the circus or a normal zoo show and whip the animals to make them do tricks.

It's not always perfect or ideal, but as a general rule, most zoos that are accredited, or certified do try to protect and care for their animals.
