The following sentences describe a few ways that Asperger's Syndrome affects families in order to provide an idea of the different ways in which it can affect families, but it is by no means a complete description. Family members, especially parents, can be exhausted from taking care of the child with Asperger's Syndrome because of the child's special needs. Because of the time the parents spend with the child with Asperger's Syndrome, siblings might feel neglected. Family members might feel embarrassed by the child's behavior in public. The child might have special skills, such as an amazing ability to do mathematical calculations in one's head or remembering the dialogue of a movie word-for-word after one viewing, which could prompt feelings of pride in the child from the parents. Paying for different therapies that might help can cause financial stress for the family. This short list illustrates that Asperger's Syndrome can affect families in physical, emotional, and financial ways.

^^^ All the above examples are ableist, presumably taken from a source such as Autism Speaks which uses such Propaganda against autism in order to increase it's profits. Autism does not destroy families as this answer suggests, for many families it makes no difference or a positive difference.

Seriously, all the examples above seem to be negative - ableist tripe!

Autism is a genetic condition, so a person is born with the susceptibility to develop autism. It can be a genetic mutation or a gene inherited from a parent. It affects males and females. It affects all ethnic groups. It affects people living all over the world. It affects all social classes.

I have a 5 year old with ASD and I'm here to tell you it has been devastating. Your whole life changes to suite your autistic child's special social needs. Going to the grocery store is impossible for instance. These children are hypersensitive to noises and lights and almost everything else that you and I deam as normal environmental stimuli. I have two older children who have missed out on alot because we can not take my five year old along. It would be hard on the whole family, because your son would take up alot more of your time with his special needs. I am not sure of how sensitive his senses are or if this would work with you but I always take something for my son to stim with, and it helps him calm down, and kind of 'zone out' when we go to the store. I try not to let him stim at home because he will completely zone out and go into his own little world however if I do go somewhere where he is likely to have a 'meltdown' (I do most of my grocery shopping online now :) ) I will let him stim with a favourite object or take something really crunchy for him to nibble on which distracts him and helps calm him down for some reason

They are mostly misunderstood by family, like everyone else. The family nonetheless strongly supports, so allowing the individual to pull through.

Many a time through word of mouth, recommendation, rumor, reading or hearsay the family for no fault of its own but concern end up putting the individual through unnecessary trouble.

They are not to blame but what else can they do? They try their best, and sometimes its not even good. But they don't know that, neither does the individual. The love and support prevail and that makes all the difference.

That's hard to answer because even in families with children that don't have autism, they are abused or mistreated. I can only speak on the families I have met and they love their children as much as any other family. These children require more attention and intervention, which can be very emotionally and physically draining but that does not cause the family to love that child any less (generally speaking).

Autistic people are not 'victims' of who they are, most Autistic people are happy and healthy with clear benefits from being autistic. Some Autistic people are not happy, in some cases Autism symptoms are so severe they cause physical pain and distress but this is not just about Autism but the symptoms that require treatment, in some cases Autistic people are unhappy about being Autistic but this is mostly to do with societal attitudes towards Autistic people.

If a child has autism it can be very hard on the family, but ultimately from what I've seen makes them stronger.

My cousin has autism, and he's 17 years old, but acts like he's 10.

If there are siblings they can sometimes feel like they don't get as much attention because the child with autism needs special attention.

It can also be hard on the parents, because they have to vocalize some rules that are common sense to someone without autism, like, "It's dangerous to climb on a roof," or, "Your sisters think their dolls are prettier with hair," and, "You can't randomly make loud ambulance noises when sitting in a room."

It's very stressful on the parents, and it's painful when they have to see their baby being picked on for being different.

How a family is effected depends on the people within the family - how severely a child is effected by their autism and whether or not the family is accepting. Unfortunately there is a culture of 'Autism Moms' who take their childs identity as their own by presenting themselves as warriors and fight autism rather than accept their child - often these same people refuse to learn about autism from Autistic people themselves to get a better understanding of their childs experiences.

Contrary to the propaganda of organizations like Autism Speaks most families with Autistic children are happy and healthy - myths perpetuated such as massive costs of having an Autistic child and it leading to divorce are nonsense. Having an Autistic child can mean extra costs but more often than not parents will spend a fortune on therapies that aren't needed or that are even harmful to the Autistic child in an attempt to make their child something they're not (neurotypical). How accepting a family is and whatever or not they're ableist makes a bigger difference than severity of Autism.

Below is an answer demonstrating ignorance towards their Autistic childs needs (refusing to allow the child to stim is cruel and makes their symptoms worse so more likely to have a meltdown later when in a high stimulation situation, not understanding that his nibbling is a form of stimming or why it calms him down) and ableism to refer to life with her son as 'devastating'. Hopefully her child will grow up to love himself and never read her ableist comments. When you treat your child as something devastating and refuse to allow them to be Autistic then that's what causes problems.
