1. The use of credit cards.- This is actually a computer program that causes this exchange to be possible.
2. The totaling of the price a customer is required to pay for their items.
3. The subtraction of the price cost from the given amount paid. (Helps with change.)
4. The track keeping of income and what items were sold.
5. To help the manager to know when certain items have to be bought again.. it keeps a record of how much of the items were sold and how much a left in stock.

I can't say this for every system out there, but there will likely be some server or server network handling the database for inventory control, and then for the checkout aisles and customer service desks there will be workstations connected to the servers in some way to retrieve and update inventory data.
