How are newer religions different from older religions and how are they similar?

The new and old are different with respect to the external practices and procedures by are similar or identical with respect to their central tenets and core ideals.
For instance Hinduism which is arguably the worlds oldest religion believes in truth, non-violence, submitting to God, love of all living things. However, the ancient hindus believed in idol worship. Not because they thought the idol was God (which is in itself foolish), but because the idol formed an excellent representation to express your love and devotion to the formless God. However, over the centuries, there has been a tendency to forget the real essence of the idol and instead of having devotion, they have been trying to show love to the idol
For instance, Islam is a newer religion, and it has slammed away the idol worship due to the above observations. And Islam says let us avoid idols so that the formless Lord can be focussed upon. However, Islam also believes in truth, non-violence, submitting to God, love of all living things. (Islam and non-violence may surprise some people. But please do not get mislead by idiotic fanatics and terrorists who in no way represent Islam.
So there you go, some of the newer religions appear to have fine tuned some of the practices and procedures but retain the original core tenets and values.
