There is a major difference between an email listserv and a newsgroup. A listserv allows people to post things, while a newsgroup simply presents the information, and does not allow anyone to post.
# In mailing lists, the messages are transmitted directly to each subscriber in the form of email messages. With a newsgroup, you can use your newsreader to browse a list of the subject lines of messages that have been posted about each topic and then you can open and read only the ones you find interesting.
Newsgroups (Usenet) are more like a forum, with all posts being public (some are moderated and/or closed groups). Email is personal, to one person or a mailing list.
