I'm not sure what you mean by 'view mode', but To change the contrast or brightness, there are probably buttons somewhere on the monitor - see the documentation that came with it. To change the size of various things on your screen, go to control panel, then choose 'display'. From the settings tab you can alter the screen resolution, which will make everything bigger (or smaller) - but may distort things, especially if you have a wide-screen monitor. If you choose the next tab along: 'appearance', you get all sorts of options via the 'advanced' button. If you just wanted to change the size of what you see on your monitor when using an Office application, click on 'view', then click on 'zoom' to change the zoom level. If you need to change zoom levels frequently, you can pin the zoom option to your toolbar: click on the down-pointing arrow at the far right of the existing toolbar, select 'add or remove buttons', then 'standard'; check the box for zoom in the list that appears.

It sounds like the computer is set up to use a higher resolution than your monitor can produce. What you need to do is go into the boot menu by pressing and holding the F8 key just after the text of the boot process begins appearing on your screen until a list of options comes up on the screen. One of those will be to enable VGA mode. This will set Windows back to using the basic 800 x 600 resolution. Highlight that option (using the arrow keys) and then press Enter. Your screen should work just fine now.

Once into Windows, right-click on any part of your desktop where there are no icons nearby and click on Properties. A small window called "Display Properties" should appear. Click on the tab titled Settings. You will see a slider there about halfway down that is called Screen Resolution. You can move that to whatever resolution you wish as the computer should have detected what resolutions are possible with your monitor. Once you select the resolution you want, click Apply and OK. There are two modes in a monitor system, Analog mode and Digital mode. But these modes are only found in LCD's not CRT's. Normal LCD's produce Analog signals while others produce digital signal based graphics. They are controlled automatically with the built-in circuitry. Some also have the options button to select the appropriate. But CRT's are analog signal producers.

Why would monitor stay in power safe mode?

There are many reasons. Here are a few in no specific order: 1) the computer is off 2) the computer is in standby 3) the computer is in screen saver mode 4) the computer is in hibernate mode 5) the video card the monitor is hooked up to is not the primary video controller (check BIOS/CMOS settings, hook the monitor to the other video controller till you fix the issue) 6) there is something wrong with the computer (power supply, video card, RAM, motherboard, processor) and the computer is not POSTing. 7) the monitor isn't hooked up to the video card, check the connector 8) the computer is in a resolution or refresh rate that is too high for the monitor. Boot in safe mode and adjust the resolution and/or refresh rates. 9) the monitor cable is broken internally. 10) the monitor itself is defective. To eliminate the monitor itself as the cause of the problem, hook it up to a known working system. If it works, look at issues 1-8. Otherwise, probably time for a new monitor.

Why should you enter safe mode when troubleshooting problems with a monitor in Windows XP?

There would be no reason to do this. I have fixed graphical settings and problems without ever going into safe mode. If the problem is with the monitor itself, then safe mode would have no effect. And if it with your display settings, you need only adjust these settings without the need for safe mode. Try checking for driver updates for your video card too. This can help get a monitor working.
