you can't... it's "real-time all wheel drive"

it has a dual pump system in the rear differential... clever stuff.

inside the differential are 2 pumps, one connected to the driveshaft from the front diff & one on the rear half shafts...

it is full of fluid (dual pump fluid only available from Honda (only use this oil!!)

when the drive shaft is turning quicker than the rear half shafts, the difference in pressure of the 2 pumps engages a "clutch pack" in the rear diff that locks the drive shaft to the diff "4WD" but when they are both turning at the same speed, the clutch is released and the car is being driven from just the front wheels thus saving petrol & wear on the clutch...

So.. when driving normally on a straight dry road where the front & back wheels are turning at the same speed, only the front wheels are being driven...

but when the front wheels turn faster that the back (loss of traction) the clutch engages and locks into 4WD until traction is restored.

the fluid needs changing every 40k miles or when you hear a groaning sound from the back when sharp turning or off-road... easy job as i just did mine yesterday in 20 minutes (1 liter of dual pump fluid is all it needs) in England it's called DPS-F

Another View: Actually YES, you can change it to 2WD by simply unhooking the drive shaft that connects the rear differential to the transmission.

Unbolting the universal joints at both the differential and the transmission ends and removing the shaft altogether will effectively render the vehicle 2WD only.

CAUTION: Since you won't actually be removing the differential and its internal gearing, you will still have to make sure you keep the differential fluid up to level.

Noise coming from rear of 2003 CRV LX Sounds tubular?

I would suspect (#1) If yours is a 4WD, check the level of the lubricant in the differential. (#2) If it is 2WD, you may have a wheel bearing going bad.
