What is better evil or good?

Philosophically, "good" is that which does some benefit or derives from a positive moral action. The converse "evil" is something intrinsically harmful or malevolent in some way. In human experience, the terms are applied subjectively and depends on who is helped and who is harmed.

Evil people have the choice to be good or evil. Good people only have their conscience to guide them as well as some "fake" form of justice they believe in. EVIL is definitely better.

One Definition:from personal experience:

Look up God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Trinity (good) & then look up evil(devil) in the dictionary. I have had numerous healings from God, not little things, but cancer of the lung & Crohn's disease of 12 years, a total heck, plus kidney failure, all kinds of stuff. The cancer was removed one night meta-physically after the Holy Spirit showed me this white mass in my lung...my doctor told me he sees no evidence of Crohn's anymore, I almost died, I could feel it, but I said a prayer for God asking for a healing & that I repent, etc. & it worked. That is good from above, free love to anyone who invites Jesus into their lives. All you have to do to save your soul is to ask Jesus to come into your life and be your Lord, save your souls, & forgive your sins, in Jesus name, Amen. Amen means 'that is that, it is a done deal", then read your King James version of The Bible and wonder at all the stuff in there. Christ will work in your life and show you things.

They talk about real people & real situations, that direct you spiritually so you will understand what the world is all about...did you know that the sky/universe was made for "signs"? (not the horoscope, civilizations fell because they allowed astrology into their temples, it's in history...).

People probably define good and evil differently, according to their individual criteria.

John 10:10 (King James Version):

10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

This verse, which relates to the personal experience above, demonstrates both good and evil. Evil in its various forms can be something in a general sense which robs us of happiness and possibly even of life itself. The restoration of life and wholeness, which is experienced by Christians who have dealings with the living God (as exampled above) is an example of something which is altogether good.

At the trial of Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, in 156 AD the following is recorded by Eusebius in his church history:

"The proconsul again urged him, saying, "Revile Christ, and I will release thee." The old man now replied, "Six and eighty years have I served Him, and He has done me nothing but good; and how could I revile Him, my Lord and Saviour."

Good in the Christian sense is an ultimate and total thing and is embodied in the person of Jesus Christ. It is said that those who entered into the presence of Hitler could sense evil. I do not doubt this. Those today who know and live in Jesus' presence sense nothing but good even in rebuke.

The fact that such a subject can be discussed at all suggests that we are much more than animals who find such matters unnecessary. There seems to be innate in man, although perverted in some (the Nazi's claimed their atrocities were for the 'good of the Reich') a sense of good and evil. It was to this universal law which the prosecutors at Nuremburg appealed, contrary to Goering's assertion that the whole matter was just a trial of the victors over the vanquished.

Good and evil can thus be sensed and felt as well as defined empirically. The defining of treachery as good by the head-hunters of Irian Jaya only further demonstrates that good is capable of being perverted. The fact that humanity almost universally recoils from such is more than just an instinct for its own survival, it is the idea that some acts are inherently evil. Christians would assert that such a standard comes from God Himself.

This depends on whether one has either a relativist concept of truth or an absolute one.

If one rejects God then one is left with no objectively verifiable source of right and wrong except what is right from one's own standpoint. None whatsoever. People may define what is good for others and is for the welfare of others quite differently and with chilling results. Goering, at the Nuremburg trials, claimed the actions of the Nazis were legal under German law and that the trial was just a trial of the victors over the vanquished.

The above is an extreme example but the truth is the same nonetheless. Without any objective and absolute standard what is right for me may not be right for you and vice-versa. And no-one can claim that what I say or do is any more right than what anyone else says.

The God of the Bible, who is the living God, who made the earth and everything in it made mankind. He gave mankind a conscience and an awareness of right and wrong. He put eternity into the heart of man and gave man the ability to know Him and to know what is right and what is wrong. This right and wrong is absolute. It is not religion. It transcends all religion.

If man turns away from the true and living God He is aimless on a shifting sea of human opinions which change over time (just as morality has changed in my own lifetime). People may well come up with their own definitions and they may well be very good. But without a reference point and any authority why should anyone follow them? If human morality without God is so good then the world should be getting better and better as more people turn away from Him. There is no evidence whatsoever that this is so. Opinion The concept of what's good or what is evil depends on social, cultural & religion dictates of the region. Example, stealing may be evil in some culture but not to others especially in times of famine. Genocide including slaughter of animals of those who do not believe in their god may be righteous to adherent of the Bible, but not to the Buddhist who teaches "Do not harm any sentient beings." Adultery may be evil to some, but not to a particular tribe in the Amazon jungle, where the wife can sleep with other men with the permission of the husband. Lying is not evil if it will produce good result. Most of us did white lies before.

God/s does not have a patent on what's good or Evil. If the gory practices in the Holy Scriptures are done today, surely, they have to to the Law of Humans.

The concept of what's good and evil also evolve with the times. Divorce in the ancient times are mostly allowed if the fault is with the women, not with men. Now it's both side.

Slavery is OK during the Biblical times until the time of Abraham Lincoln, but today, slavery is evil. Usury and putting interest on a loan is evil according to the New Testament, but now it's a common practice. etc, etc..... God = Good, Satan = Evil and a person is defined by which they follow.

The main problems with forming opinions on 'whether there are good and evil people' are:

1. Defining good and evil.
2. Deciding (or reaching some sort of agreement/consensus on) who decides what is good and evil.
3. Determining if the concepts of good and/or evil (morality) are innate in all people, or only some.
4. If morality is innate, why do people have vastly different and conflicting ideas of what is good and what is evil?
5. Determining if the 'god' concept plays a major or minor role in creating or modifying personal morality.
6. Is morality simply a personal matter, or is it more likely to be the consequence/product of environment/culture/society?
7. Can the terms 'good' and 'bad' be simply summarised by saying that good is something which, when practiced, benefits society, and that 'evil' is something which is harmful and detrimental to society?
8. If the moral concepts of good and evil can be established, then, if 'good' is done, or if 'evil' is done, does this determine that the person is either good or evil, or is it just their actions that we are able to judge.

Putting these challenges to one side, history and current debates reveal that the issues of good and evil are far from clear. Or, if they are clear, why doesn't everyone agree on the matter!

Some views:

• All people are good, except that some 'good' people do evil things sometimes.

• God is good, and therefore all people are good because humankind was created by god in his own image.

• There are no absolutes such as 'good' or 'evil'. Such concepts are entirely the product of human reasoning, and, furthermore, given the record of the horrendous deeds committed by humans at all levels of society down through the ages, it is evident that morality is not a quality that all humans possess. As there does not seem to be any agreement on what is good or evil, it is not possible to apply the labels 'good' or 'bad/evil' to any person or people.

• What we do is all pre-determined. We are programmed to think, feel and behave the way we do. This being so, personal considerations of good or evil are irrelevant as we are all part of some universal plan where someone else is pulling the strings and making the moves. As puppets or pawns, we have no choice, and there is no need of choice, given that everything is following the prescribed pattern, for what purpose and to what end, no-one seems to know, but we don't need to know because what will be will be, and our viewpoints and opinions are nothing and without value, given that what we say or do can have no effect on matters, which are either working through some complex pattern, or, although matters are pre-determined, life has no purpose whatsoever.

• We have choice (free-will) and each of us can decide, in large measure, what we do and how we do it, and that our decisions will have a direct bearing on our future, in the long term if not in the short term, and that if we do good our future good prospects are assured, and if we do evil, our demise is similarly assured.

• Nothing is, in itself, either good or bad, but thinking about it makes it so, i.e. reasoning creates the labels 'good' or 'bad'. Therefore people cannot be good or bad, by nature nor for any other reason, but thinking about the issuesleads us to make moral judgments and come to 'ethical' conclusions, which may not have any sound basis on, or connection with, the facts of life.

• God is good and all goodness comes from him. The devil is evil and all evil comes from him. 'Good' people allow themselves to be influenced by god. Bad people do not, and consequently, have allowed themselves to be influenced by the devil.

• We are simply animals but with arrogant pretensions that we are different and better than 'animals'. As animals our behaviour is driven by instinct and the need to survive. We will do anything, absolutely anything, to survive, even if this means doing so-called 'evil' things to fellow humans.

• Within us lurks the conflicting forces of good and evil. We need to channel those forces and lead a balanced life, adopting our own morality (ethical code, principles etc) to do so.

• God decides what is good and evil. People are therefore influenced by their respective gods and cannot be held responsible for their 'apparently evil' actions if they are done in the name of the god they worship.

• Good means doing evil sometimes, for the greater good.

• No-one is evil. A person who does evil things is probably the victim of circumstances. Given the right circumstances, guidance and support they can make attitude and behavioral changes and become truly 'good' people.

• God decides who is good and who is evil. Humans have neither the ability nor the authority to judge others.

There are many reasons why something or someone would be either good or evil, however most things and people are not 100% one way or the other. Most of us have some good and some evil inside us all the time.

Here are some traits of good things/people:

• desire to help others
• desire to see peace and tolerance between people
• desire to do the right thing
• desire to help people become better

Here are some traits of evil things/people

• desire to help only themselves
• desire to see chaos and war between people
• desire to do whatever they want, no matter what happens to others
• desire to make people do evil things

As to why something would be good or evil -- nobody really knows why some people choose to be evil. You usually choose to be good in order to be liked, to be rewarded in the afterlife, or just out of a desire to genuinely be a good and helpful person.

well hindus believe that cow are sacred animals and let them wander the land polluting the water and becoming a breeding ground for disease. however they treat the women worse than the cows and you can be stoned to death if you commit adultery and if you are believed to be a devil child you will be starved and tortured like in medieval times. also you must cover your hair at all times because obviously hair is too sexual to be seen by other people.

You don't need a definition of good and evil, as a duality. And the concepts of good and evil have nothing to do with religion.
Good is simply that which helps and does least harm to others. Evil is that which is unconcerned for the welfare of others, or even intentionally seeks to harm the interests of others.

Some say that following a religion helps people to be good. There are examples for and against this. No one doubts that Mahatma Ghandi was one of the notably good people of the twentieth century, and he was a fervent Jainist. On the other hand, history is full of examples of persecutions, burnings-at-the-stake, wars and terrorism, all in the name of religion. Some of the greatest evils in history have been committed forthe furtherance of religious belief. But discussions of religion do little to tell us how to actually define good and evil. We are left with the definition in the previous paragraph.
