Anaemia can be hereditary, (for example people with thalasemia) or can be the result of a diet poor in foods rich in iron. Foods rich in iron are red meat, spinach, parsley, spinach etc. Also, a person might have high levels of blood iron and the feritine might be low and that means that the body cannot absorb iron, despite receiveing it.

There are several causes of anemia:

1. Nutritional anemia

A poor diet with not enough iron, amino acids or vitamin B12 will lead to reduced red blood cell count.


2. Pernicious anemia

Haematopoiesis is not sufficient due to the stomach's inability of produce the intrinsic factor. The intrinsic factor is needed for vitamin B12 absorption and vitamin B12 is needed for erythropoiesis.


3. Aplastic anaemia

Red bone marrow, the main site of haematopoiesis in an adult, is destroyed or inhibited by irradiation, toxic drugs, cancer or other factors. The bone marrow is replaced by fatty tissue, fibrous tissue or tumour cells.


4. Haemolytic anemia

The destruction of red blood cells is accelerated due to abnormal hemoglobin structure. This occurs in thalassaemia and sickle-cell anemia.


5. Microcytic, hypochromic anemia

The small red blood cell size will reduce hemoglobin concentration.
