Roaches nest everywhere in an apartment, especially in places that do not get disturbed much. If you have the time to fumigate your current place do it before you move. There is a brown gel that comes in a tube (Combat) that we have had good luck with. You can also get some 'bombs' that you set in each room and start them spraying before you leave for a few hours (be sure to open all closets and drawers, turn off all pilot lights [stove, furnace, water heater] close outside windows and doors, and remove pets [dogs, cats, fish and especially birds], just follow the instructions on the package the bombs come in). Check out the new apartment early in the morning before the sun comes up with all the lights off - go in the kitchen and turn on the light and look around and under the sink for roaches. Use the brown gel in the new place before you move in to keep any residual pests that may have survived the move from moving into the new place. You must be vigilant and act fast when you see a lone roach and exterminate it or they will infest your new place. Apartments are tough because you don't know if your new neighbors are racing roaches for fun and profit!
Keep food covered... Clean it really good put roach proof in areas behind fridge stove etc. keep it away from kids and pets. I wash meat styrofoam containers and use them. If your neighbors are nasty you will only keep them back you won't get rid of them. Keep your trash out food covered and dishes washed
The best option is to talk to the Apartment Management and try to keep penalties at a minimum. Another good option is to Sublease the apartment to another party, but you still may have to pay a small portion of the rent.
