I don't know what kind of cheap auto parts you got but you aren't supposed to. you replace the whole plastic housing assembly.

Follow the fat hose from the radiator down to where it goes into the engine block. The thermostat is located in the housing bolted to the engine, to which the hose is attached.

Under the radiator hose that meets the top of the engine under the throttlebody if you follow the heater hose from firewall on the driverside toward the engine it goes to the thermostat housing.

The 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala only came with a 3.4 and 3.8 V6 (6 cylinder) engines. Are you sure that you don't have a Malibu instead? at the emd of the upper rad hose you will find the thermostat housing. Take the 2 bolts out and remove it. When reinstalling it make sure the spring on the thermostat goes toward the engine.
On the 3.5L The thermostat is actually part of the water neck on the front of the motor. Passenger side on the front. Follow the radiator hose to the engine. Where it goes into the engine is the water neck. It is all one piece.
