1. Do not rub. Blot carefully and quickly to avoid spreading the stain. If you have a wetvac, use this first to suck out the excess. You can also use a white or colour-fast cloth or paper towel for blotting. Place light pressure at first and apply more pressure to absorb as more liquid out.

2. Sponge luke warm water and blot by placing heavy pressure on a white towel/cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Repeat this process at least twice or until transfer of the stain from the carpet to the cloth ceases.

3. Mix 75ml white vinegar to 150ml of water and apply to the affected area by spraying or blotting. Blot with a clean white cloth or paper towel and continue the process until you no longer see transfer of the stain to the cloth. Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

4. If a stain remains, sponge on a mild cleaning solution. Use 1-2 tsp. of a mild detergent and mix it with at least a litre of warm water. Sponge liberally onto the affected area and remove with a wetvac or by placing downward pressure on a fresh towel. Do this at least twice to remove as much of the coffee as possible. Quick tip - stand on the towel after sponging on the mild detergent mixture. This will increase the transfer of moisture (including the coffee) from the carpet to the towel.

6. Rinse: Rinse by liberally sponging on tap water and putting pressure on the area with a dry cloth/towel to remove excess moisture. It's preferable to use an absorbent cloth so that it can hold as much moisture as possible. Use your nose to smell if there is still any vinegar residues left on the carpet.

7. Use a fan for speed drying.

A coffee stain may be removed from a textile with a combination of water, vinegar and a touch of neutral detergent such as a clear liquid dishwashing detergent. About 1/2 ounce of white household vinegar, a quarter teaspoon of detergent and about a half cup of water should work well. Apply the mixture to the detergent and gently massage the liquid into the stained area and let set for a half hour then reapply and after setting a few minutes wash as normal. If a bit of the stain remains apply a mixture of QxyClean and water (about a half teaspoon to a half cup of hot water) and let stand. check the stained area and if not removed in half an hour, reapply.

If the coffee contains cream or a whitener then this first needs to be removed with a citrus based oil or grease remover. Apply straight and massage gently to allow the degreaser to penetrate and after about thirty minutes begin the procedure with vinegar/soap/water.

Most any staining that originates from the ground (such as coffee beans, soft drinks, vegetable juice, etc) is acidic and needs to have an acid put back into the stained area in order to get the staining material back into suspension so it can be flushed. Some stains also contain butter or fat and must be removed as described above with a citrus degreaser.
