2. You need patience and an encouraging attitude because if you are negative about your child's ability to learn English, or his or her bad pronunciation then you are just pouring cold water over the topic, and more than likely you will put your child off from wanting to learn.

The best way is to speak to them in English. English-speaking parents have found this the best way; it even works with new-born babies and young children.

With older ones, it is still best to speak to them in English. Start with very easy things and get them to copy you. Use gestures, facial expressions and other body language as appropriate.

Lesson 2: extend hand for handshake> "Nice to meet you." - nice to meet you

The lessons need to be short and focused. In this way the student hasn't got to try to remember too much each time. It gives them time to reflect on what they have learnt and to practice it between lessons.

Keep it simple. Make the student feel comfortable. Make sure they USE to language they are learning. Working in a group is fun; it takes the pressure off any one student, and they will learn from each other.

When they are reasonably comfortable with basic speaking, show them the written form of the words as you speak. Get them to copy it. Then get them to read it. Of course all this takes time, but don't worry, it takes a baby about 2 or 3 years before they can speak a sentence, and doubtless a more mature student will make progress a lot quicker.

TO MAKE THE LESSONS progressive and practical, a lot of work has to put into preparing suitable lessons and material for the student. Some form of text-book will make it easier to do this. Many people enjoy teaching English so much that they go on a special training course to learn how to teach English to people whose first language is not English.

A person who is trained becomes competent and confident, assets that make the language 'teaching<>learning' process more enjoyable and effective.
