How can you tell if someone is researching suicide to help people or hurt themselves?

Answer is in the question perhaps? Are they looking at the 'How-To' or 'Reasons for' aspects of it, either that or take them out on a random day and just chat them up, get a feel, it all boils down to how well you know this person and if it's not that well.....find someone who does.

In fact, one way to prevent suicide is to facilitate a person at risk of killing themselves ("a suicidal person") to talk openly about what is going on in their lives that has taken them to thinking about suicide. By talking to a compassionate listener a person can come to value themselves more highly and to be able to see new ways to deal with the difficult issues in their lives.
