you cant really. often they break and theres really no indication of a problem except that it is broken. very old belts (130,000 miles perhaps) sometimes have cracks on them but to see the cracks you have to do about a third of the job of replacing it. its best just to have it replaced at the factory designated interval, (90,000 miles).
