First let me clarify that it was not AIDS itself that spread rapidly in the 1980s it was the virus that causes AIDS, HIV, that actually spread. The reason that HIV spread so fast in the 1980's was a combination of a lack of understanding of the disease by the medical and scientific professionals of the time, as well as stigma and ignorance that was indirectly emphasized by society as well as the Reagan Administration. When the first AIDS cases were first diagnosed in 1981 information on the structure and function of the HIV virus was unavailable to medical professionals, much less to the general public. The public was not aware exactly how it was spread and because it was isolated to only a handful of cases, the public continued to partake in risky behaviors that are now known to heighten your chance of contracting HIV. (i.e sharing needles, having unprotected sex) Furthermore, the patients of the first diagnosed cases of HIV/AIDS were almost exclusively gay men and with no other information available at the time, the public incorrectly assumed that the HIV/AIDS was a disease that was confined that those of homosexual orientation. This, combined with a non responsive federal government as far as funds and distribution of information concerning the disease all contributed to the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in the 1980s.

In the first place it took time before anyone realised that it even existed, by this time it had already spread all over the world. secondly it is spread through a thoroughly pleasant pastime, sex, it was also spread through contaminated blood products. But the thing that probably had more to do with the uncontrolled spread of aids is the outlook that the churches and so called respectable people and the church had towards it. Rather then behave in a responsible and compassionate way they used it to scare people they fought safer sex methods tooth and nail and did whatever they could to misinform and to put fear into the hearts of people.

One of the reasons is all of the unprotected and early sex that younger adults are getting into.
