Some ways they participated in government were paying taxes, housing soldiers, serving as local leaders and enforcing laws. Since the main government was so far away, some of them became disenchanted with a government that charged them so much to take care of them without getting a say in the process or knowing the local situations very well, but many were happy and very loyal before the revolution.

The colonists didn't participate very much in colonial government. First, the only people who could vote had to be white males over 21 who owned land. This left only the wealthy to maintain the government and make decisions. Second, many people lived in wilderness areas and didn't have a community to become involved in. Third, they thought of the king as the government and to think otherwise was treason. Finally, they were busy with their farms ( 90% of them farmed) and creating colonies. Most didn't even go to church which would have provided a foundation for government ( records show only about 20% of colonists attended services). The people concerned with government were the wealthy and educated. The answer below was happening in the middle to late 1700's. It wasn't until about 1773 that more people were resisting British rule. Many of the immigrants who came in the 1600- 1740's were Irish immigrants who shunned any form of government.
