Answer :from a Non-Christian PerspectiveOften by force. Constantine made it the "official" religion of the Roman Empire which is the main reason (in my opinion) it is as prevailant as it is today. The crusaides were 200 years of holy wars, and during the inquisition which lasted 600 years and ended just this last century, anyone within the church's grasp could be tortured, executed, etc (usually by the most horrific means imaginable, being cooked alive, having your bones crushed and dislocated etc) for contradicting the teachings of the church even (or I should say especially) if you believed in the bible and christ.

When the first settlers came to America, for instance, it was illegal not to go to church, and anyone who refused would be publically whipped.

Nowadays however society has moved past such barbarism, and Christianity usually spreads through psychological manipulation, such as offering broken down individuals (people in 3rd world countries, rehab, prison etc especially) an invitation to heaven, where all of their burdens will be no more and they will live forever.

And especially through indoctrination. I've talked to thousands of people about their religious beliefs and 99% of the time if someone believes in the bible it's either because they were instilled with a bias towards it in their youth, or they were told they *had* to believe in it to improve their lives, relieve guilt, get into heaven etc.

Another way, which is really cynical I think - is in Catholicism the teaching that condom use is immoral (despite all common sense and with no rational biblical argument) at the expense of millions of lives each year in Africa alone lost to HIV. I think the catholic church does this to make sure catholics have unprotected sex, lots of children, and that way they retain their numerical dominance in the theater of world religion.

Answer: from a Christian PerspectiveAt the very beginning of the Christian era, on the day of Pentecost, it is specifically mentioned that 'there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men out of every nation under heaven.' (Acts 2:5) These, who heard Peter's sermon and were converted took the Christian message to their respective nations at an early date.

Persecution of the early Christians actually helped to spread it, contrary to the expectations of the persecutors. The disciples were then spread far and wide as they fled their attackers and shared the gospel wherever they went. Acts 11:19-21.

Rome also, being a centre of both trade and government had a Christian presence from an early date as people travelled there who had received Christ elsewhere.

Persecution has never been a method used by the spirit of God to spread the Christian faith since co-ercion is specifically an anti-Christian activity, despite the name of Christ being wrongly taken or mis-used by those who sought to win others by force. Since belief in Christ involves a willing assent, co-ercion cannot produce a repentance and willing change in the heart which is required. This has never been God's method and true Christians and non-Christian alike are rightly offended at its use.

When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman empire in the fourth century, it was inevitable that it would be the religion of the entire Mediterranean area and of all Europe. Persecution would ensure that all other religions were eliminated throughout this area.

When European nations began to colonise the New World, it was a time of religious fervour, particularly in Spain and Portugal. It is natural that the soldiers and missionaries took Christianity with them to the New World and imposed it on the natives.

The rest is history. Christianity allowed no competitors wherever it had absolute control, and this now included all Europe, the Americas, much of the Philippines and the Pacific region. Missionaries have even taken Christianity to regions that never were European colonies, but with less success than in the former colonies.

Through evangelism, conquest, and missionary work.

AnswerWe know that by the time of St Paul, Christianity had spread throughout much of the Near East and Greece, and at least as far as Rome. It may be that part of the reason for this spread was the spread of the diaspora Jews through the Roman Empire. However, Paul undoubtedly played a major part in this early expansion.

By the early fourth century, Christians formed a significant minority of the population of the Roman Empire, estimated at around ten per cent. When Constantine became the Roman Emperor, he gave Christianity state patronage and expended considerable state funds on a major program of church building and maintenance. When German tribes were conquered, Constantine required as part of the peace treaty that they convert to Christianity. Soon Christians were to be found throughout the empire. Before the end of the fourth century, Christianity was declared the state religion of the Roman Empire, and the public worship of the old gods was banned.

The next great wave of expansion came with the European conquests in the Americas, then Africa and the Pacific region. This took Christianity to all parts of the world.

Answer

Missionaries and monks helped spread Christianity. Perhaps the most powerful force that helped spread Christianity into northern Europe was pope. Popes sent missionaries to teach people in northern kingdoms about Christianity. Some missionaries traveled great distances to spread Christianity to new lands. One of the first places popes sent missionaries was Britain. One of the first missionaries to travel to northern Europe was Saint Patrick, who took upon himself to teach people about Christianity. In the mid-400s Patrick traveled from Britain to Ireland to convert the people there.

A:Christianity was bound to succeed in Europe, parts of the Middle East and in North Africa because of its support by Emperor Constantine and his successors, who gave Christianity state patronage and began the long persecution of the pagans, finally making the worship of other gods a crime punishable by death.

In its early days there were more Christians outside Europe than in Europe. Philip Jenkins (The Lost History of Christianity) says that by around 1000 CE, Asia had 17 to 20 million Christians, with a further 5 million in Africa. He estimates that Europe had some 25 to 30 million Christians, whose faith in many cases was very notional indeed compared with the ancient churches of Asia and Africa. The gradual abandonment of Christianity outside Europe resulted in the modern emphasis on Europe, almost as if Europe was the origin of the faith.

Christianity reached the New World of the Americas, parts of Africa and to Australia and the Pacific from Europe, largely as a result of conquest and colonisation. Missionaries re-established Christianity in East Asia but have met limited success where colonisation has not occurred.
