The "discovery" of the New World by Christopher Columbus changed the history of the world completely. This is not to say that Columbus himself was that important -- he was just the first European to reach the New World in circumstances that allowed for major colonization to happen. So it was not the "discovery" that mattered so much as the colonization.

Columbus's "discovery" allowed the period of colonization to begin. This had a number of important effects. From our perspective as Americans, the eventual creation of the US is probably the most important of these effects. By "finding" the New World, Columbus started its European colonization. This eventually ended up allowing the US to be created. The creation of the US helped, among other things, to move much of the world towards democracy. It also led to the development of what is now the world's only superpower.

A world without the United States is impossible to imagine today. The existence of the US was made possible by the "discovery" of America and that is, therefore, one of the ways in which Columbus's discovery changed history.then he pooped his pants

If Columbus had not found the New World, Magellan and all those other explorers would have never been encouraged to sail around the world. Also, if Columbus had not been funded by the Spanish king and queen, the New World would have been very different. For example, Spanish is the main language of Mexico and widely spoken in the US. If Columbus had been sponsored by the Portuguese or French, the culture of the New World would have been very different

Columbus didn't influence the world much in his time. He was considered a failure and died fighting the crown for his share of anything he found. He expected to find a lot of gold to bring back to Spain to off set the cost of his ships and he didn't succeed in his task in any of his 4 voyages. To the Native Americans he influenced their life a great deal. He brought STD's, the flu, and other diseases to the New World. He started a flood of other explorers who considered Native Americans good for slavery and not much else. Eventually, they would loose their lands, life styles, and cultures to the flood of Europeans that would invade their lands. Columbus was just the start of all of it.
