With the increasing signs of the heavy toll her active life seemed to finally be taking on her she was at persuaded by family and friends to seek the advice of a specialist. Not long after she was was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, though at the time it was misdiagnosed as another form of anemia and thus mistreated.

During the course of her treatment her immune system was weakened and she developed bone marrow tuberculosis, recurring from a primary 1919 infection. This original infection had occurred during her trip to France with FDR following the end of WWI.

Eleanor Roosevelt died at her Manhattan apartment on the evening of November 7, 1962 at the age of 78. She was buried in accordance with her husbands wishes, beside him in the rose garden of his estate Spring Wood, in Hyde Park, NY.
