Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Junior, and other people famous in Black History helped make the government stop slavery throughout the years. In those days, novels were first published one chapter at a time in newspapers before appearing in book form. Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, horrified readers and fueled abolitionist sentiments, especially in the North. Of course, the slaves were not freed until after the war began, but I am told that when Lincoln met Stowe, he called her the little woman who started the big war.

Harriet Beecher Stowe played an important role in the movement to end slavery in the United States. While she took direct action against slavery, she is perhaps best know for her literary work Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was published in installments originally beginning in 1851. The year after the passage of the Fugitive SLave Law that made it illegal to help those fleeing from oppression. She also wrote the slightly less well known Life Among The Lowly. Both works seek to illuminate the inhumanity and injustice of slavery. She and her husband also participated in the Underground Railroad movement by sheltering those making the flight to freedom. What makes her even more heroic is the courage she possessed to speak up in a time when women were not supposed to be outspoken, and slavery was not a popular topic.
