Well, in the movie about Helen Keller, "The Miracle Worker", it shows Helen's mother standing over her crib talking to her. When she talked to her, Helen made no obvious response, and she stared past her mother instead of at her. So, the parents called a doctor, and he confirmed that Helen was indeed blind and deaf, because of a recent illness.
In a book . . .At school, my teacher read a Helen Keller book to us. When Helen was little, her mother had shone a bright light in front of her eyes to see if she was blind. Helen did not blink. She just stared at the light. So the mother discovered she was blind.
Helen was not deaf at first though. At dinner time, either her mother or father rings the bell so Helen knows it's dinner time. Helen loved to hear the bell. But one day, her mother rang the bell in front of Helen's ear. She didn't come to listen to it. The mother knew her daughter was also deaf.
