In the Kansas-Nebraska act, the U.S. government allowed the people living in Kansas and Nebraska to vote on wheather they should be slave states or not. Many people rushed to Kansas to state their opinion. Fighting began and blood stained the ground, giving Kansas the nickname "Bleeding Kansas".
