Retreating from the French invasion, John took a safe route around the marshy area of the Wash to avoid the rebel held area of East Anglia. His slow baggage train (including the Crown Jewels), however, took a direct route across it and was lost to the unexpected incoming tide. This dealt John a terrible blow, which affected his health and state of mind. Succumbing to dysentery and moving from place to place, he stayed one night at Sleaford Castle before dying on 18 October (or possibly 19 October) 1216, at Newark Castle (then in Lincolnshire, now on Nottinghamshire's border with that county). Numerous, possibly fictitious, accounts circulated soon after his death that he had been killed by poisoned ale, poisoned plums or a surfeit of peaches

he had dysentery from eating to many peaches and drinking too much ale

he didnt eat any peaches ok that's a lie

King Canute battled against Edmund Ironside, just as both their fathers did before. They came to an agreement, The Treaty of Olney which gave Edmund rule over southern parts of the country and Canute rule over Danelaw and the English Midlands. However, because Edmund died soon thereafter, Canute became ruler over the whole country, the first to do so successfully. He was also ruler over Viking homelands and therefore kept England safe from attacks for twenty years. He was also a Christian and had many churches built.

The best-known story of King Canute the Great concerns certain sycophantic courtiers who were treating him as if he were a god. So he had his throne taken down to the sea and he sat there commanding the waves not to rush in over him. The waves, of course did and he had proved his point.
