Disputation of Doctor Martin Lutheron the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences
See link below:
The Catholic church believed that getting to heaven was through good works on earth. If you acted good here, you would get into heaven. Also, they believed that you had to regularly attend church. This was seen as a good work and would help you get into heaven. Another belief of the Catholics was that you could buy indulgences from the church which would forgive all your past, present, and future sins here on earth and reduce you time in purgatory. (Indulgences are little cards bought from the pope that was believed to reduce your time in purgatory or hell). Lastly, they thought that on top of good works, the pope could help you achieve salvation.
Followers of Luther believed that the only way to heaven was not through good works on earth or the pope but instead, justification through faith. This meant that if you believed in God, you'd have a pretty chance of getting into heaven. Since they believed this, they did not need popes to help them with salvation. Also, if the way to get to heaven was through faith and believing, they believed that you did not have to attend any church services and not attending wouldn't ruin your chances of getting into heaven. Lastly, followers of Luther were completely against the selling of indulgences because they believed that only God could forgive your sins and keep you from going to hell.
This battle of beliefs was the reason why the Catholic Church was so mad when Luther posted his theses. They went against almost everything the Catholic Church believed in.
He challenged the Catholic Church on a number of points; most significantly the practice of confession, and forms of absolution including the sale of indulgences.
He also questioned the veneration of saints, and holy relics. He questioned the idea of prayer to saints as in his opinion all prayer should be directed to God alone. he saw prayer to saints as at best unnecessary, and at worst idolatry.
Another idea he questioned was that of Purgatory; for which he could find no basis in scripture.

Luther castigated some of the teaching of the Catholic Church
His original intention was only to reform the Roman Catholic Church, but his actions led to a split of the Church, dividing it into the Protestant and Catholic branches.
It would be nice to know which beliefs. Many people left the Roman Catholic Church, believing Martin Luther to be right where it comes to salvation according to Scripture. Conservative Reformed traditions still hold to the doctrines that were revived by Luther's influence.
They were known as the 95 Theses, you may view them at the link below.

Luthers action with The Emperor was to challenge the accusations
Martin Luther's ideas were threatening because his ideas went against what the Roman Catholics were teaching. The points he made shed light onto the truth in the Bible that salvation can not be earned. This idea took away the Catholic church's major source of income, paying to wipe out sins. God's love for all humans and their faith in his Son is all that's necessary. God gave his only Son to die and thereby paid the cost of all sin. All we humans must do is believe in Jesus Christ.
