Dr. King was a very important leader in the civil rights movement. A dynamic orator, he made a number of memorable speeches, including the one known as "I Have a Dream"-- this speech is considered by many scholars to be an excellent example of effective public speaking. A preacher as well as a civil rights leader, he was able to mobilize and unify black people (and some white supporters too) to march and peacefully protest until southern blacks finally achieved their rights. As a historical figure, Martin Luther King was able to become the kind of leader necessary to help the Civil Rights Movement advance. And while he had some personal flaws, there is no question that his leadership spearheaded the civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s.

Martin Luther King, Jr. helped all Americans, and especially African Americans in the Civil Rights Movements to end segregation and discrimination throughout the country. He did this by speaking out publicly and often, and leading many of the organized efforts to making segregation and discrimination illegal.
