Since the 1700s when there was colonies the western border with New Hampshire has always been accepted but there was one main problem and that was Canada. the united states and canda has been having alot of disputes over the land in northern Maine the united states wanted maine to extend all the way up New Brunswick(canada) but canada steped down and argued that maine should be short of land. Finally in 1839 19 years after statehood a treaty was signed to call for an agreement of present day northern boundary.

There was alot of border disputes with Massachusetts during 1700s so it took 30-50 years to draw simple borders but back then the surveying techinque was different and massachusetts was a royal colony. To this day Rhode Island and New Hampshire are still disputing over land claims of Massachusetts. I would say during Britsh ruling King George 1,2 and 3 just only drew random colony lines to end land disputes between neigboring colonies. It really can not be explained on how Massachusetts got its shape.

New Hampshire's neighbors are Maine to the east, Vermont to the west, and Massachusetts to the south. New Hampshire had land disputes with Massachusetts and Maine. The Piscataqua river and Salmon Falls river helps shape New Hampshire and Maine half border on Atlantic coast. The land border was not surveyed and therefore a straight line was drawn on map to finish border between New Hampshire and Maine. Read carefully:

New Hampshire's southern border with Massachusetts started in 1629 when two two colonies had disagreements over their mutual boundaries. With the respect to the southern boundary of New Hampshire the two provinces disagreed on the meaning of 3 miles northward of Merrimack river. New Hampshire drew a line from 3 miles north of the mouth of the river, while Massachusetts claimed a line three miles north of the northernmost part of the river taking its territory past Concord, New Hampshire. New Hampshire appealed to King George II who decreed the boundary to run along a curved line 3 miles from the river between the ocean and a point 3 miles north of (Lowell MA) where river begins to turn north. This line was to be drawn west on 42 parallel '02 to meet with New York. New Hampshire claimed Vermont as well as New York from Connecticut river. It took years for present day border to be understood.
