well, he was at first just a lieutenant in the french army but at the battle of toulon, he defeated the british troops and gave the french people a much needed military victory. then, he became the person whose name was known to everyone and was the center of attention and talk within the french society. after the battle of toulon, the french mob wanted to overthrow the directory, napoleon was brought into Paris to quell the revolt. when he sucessfully put down the flame, he was once again the center of talk and gained the attention of the french military leaders and promoted to general. he was the youngest general in the french military. at age 22. then again, the french public wanted to overthrow the committee of public safety. napoleon to the rescue again and then he secured himself an election in which he won and was given the title first consul, and he was the most powerful person in France at the time.

He studied very hard and the military leaders saw he was very talented. He got promotion after promotion and eventually committed a coupe in 1799, taking over the power of France. He crowned himself emperor in 1804 and turned France into an empire.
