Despondent over the death of his son, Emeric, Stephen descended into failing health and sought to avoid turning his kingdom over to his cousin, Vazul, who had a strong claim to the throne but was a pagan. Stephen ignored Vazul's claim for this reason and named the son of his sister, Peter Orseolo as heir. He died after making sure Christianity would remain the religion of the kingdom.
