Tim Curry was very popular on the West End in the musical, The Rocky Horror Show. When 20th Century Fox decided to make it into a film and most of the original West End cast was able to retain their stage roles, Tim Curry would make his first American film.

When Rocky Horror Picture Show, the film, was released to lackluster sales, as a feature film, in 1975. An executive from Fox, attempted to save the film by making it a midnight feature. The midnight movie of the film began drawing multiple viewings by the same people, and they began bringing their friends and began wearing the costumes (from the film) and eventually talking back to the screen. Many of these regular fans at midnight had an attraction to the cross-dressing character, Frank N. Furter, portrayed by the ambiguous Tim Curry.

Fans began seeking him out. When Tim Curry came to New York, after the release of Rocky Horror Picture Show, and made his first album and did concerts at various clubs. The movie fans would go to these concerts and spread the word about him at these concerts and the film received lots of attention.

Tim Curry became famous from the film that many said Mr. Curry hated. [Personally, I never heard Mr. Curry saying he hated the film (that made his career). Only that many times fans do not recognize he has done a lot of other work since then.].
