The Tom Riddle who appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is sixteen year old Voldemort preserved inside the diary, which is a Horcrux. When Ginny Weasley started telling the diary her secrets, she allowed that part of Voldemort's soul to start possessing her. The Horcrux grew stronger, while Ginny grew weaker.
