We are introduced to a Tom who, being a typical boy seeking fun and adventure, feels no shame or remorse for breaking rules, lying and being selfish.

But he is never really out to hurt anyone either.

Tom lies about getting into his aunt's homemade jam, about skipping school, about painting the fence all by his lonesome, and cheats instead of actually memorizing Bible passages, all for selfish reasons. He wants to impress the new girl, Becky, and he wants to have fun instead of being stuck in school or burdened with chores.

All of his actions, through the first half of the book, including taking the raft with Huck, show a selfishness and lack of feelings for others. But that may be because he never really stopped to think, or had no real cause to think that his selfishness was really ever going to hurt anyone, just free him to get what he wants.

It is no surprise then, that this self-absorbed Tom again only thinks of his own interests when he and Huck see what they see at the graveyard. At first, Tom is easily convinced by Huck that they must never reveal to anyone what they saw, because telling anyone whould almost certainly lead to being hunted down by Injun Joe.

Tom not only agrees, he writes an oath never to tell, in his own blood.

But as the days follow, and Tom sees that poor old Muff Potter is being accused by the real killer for the crime they witnessed, his conscience cannot bear it.

Fearing Injun Joe, and the consequences of breaking a blood oath, he comes forward to tell the truth even though he is nearly certain that it may cost him his life.

Tom's courage to tell the truth, not just to the public defender, but in open court in front of the whole town and Injun Joe himself, completes the change in Tom.

He has chosen not to do the easy thing, the selfish thing, even though he has the strongest possible reasons for doing so. Instead, he chooses to come forward at great risk to help someon else, an innocent man facing an almost certain hanging without his help.

Tom also takes great pains to keep the name of his friend Huck out of his eyewitness account, accepting the entire risk onto himself.
