It derives from the name of one of Morocco's chief cities: Marrakesh, which in Arabic is Moraksh. The Europeans had difficulty pronouncing the "ksh" so it came up as Morako -- Morocco. This is why the name for Morocco differs strongly between European languages (each of them was grasping at how to pronounce Marrakesh) - Marruecos in Spanish, Maroc in French, Marrocos in Portuguese, Marokko in German, and Marroco in Italian.
